					Audio and Music equality and diversity action plan
April 2011-1March 2012
This template should be used for the „umbrella‟ divisional action plan. We
recommend it is also used for sub-sectional/departmental/action plans to
facilitate a consistent approach to action planning, monitoring and
reporting. For example, use it for Journalism as well as for Sport; News;
Global News etc; for Vision as well as for Drama; Children‟s; Factual etc;
likewise for A&M as well as for each of the Channels and so on.

Introduction

What does Equality & Diversity mean to the BBC?
Equality – refers to the concept of equal opportunities and is centred
around legal compliance in employment i.e. how the BBC ensures that it
removes unlawful discrimination on the grounds of the equality strands.
Diversity – refers to the business case for considering a range of groups
of people in the delivery of our services, programming or through our
employment practices. For example how the BBC leverages the
opportunities that different stakeholders can bring to it, to add value to our
services and programmes and ensure they are meaningful to the totality
of the UK‟s audiences.
Strands of Equality & Diversity – age, caring responsibilities, disability,
ethnicity, gender, marital/civil partnership status, pregnancy and
maternity, religion or belief, sexual orientation, socio-economic group,
regionality and transgender.

Diversity and Audio and Music
Audio & Music is the home of nine of the BBC‟s national radio stations,
four performing groups, the BBC Proms as well as classical and pop
music production across radio television and online.
The delivery of diversity in Audio and Music is supported by the Diversity
Champions Denis Nowlan (Network Manager of Radio 4) and Andy Parfitt
(Controller Radio 1, 1Xtra and Asian Network). The Diversity
Champion(s) chair the Diversity Action Group, which is made up of key
senior leaders from within the division and the Diversity Network Group,
which is made up of staff from across the division who are passionate
about diversity. The role of the Diversity Action Group is to drive the
diversity agenda within the division and to review progress against the
divisional diversity action plan, enabling barriers to success / deliver of the
actions to be overcome. The Diversity Network Group has been
established as an “ideas” or creative group to help resolve diversity issues
and to find creative ways to embed diversity within everyday activity.
