Position Description



President-Elect





Overview statement/general purpose

To provide support and continuity to the leadership structure of the Michigan Organization

of Diabetes Educators (MODE).





How appointed

Elected position. Requires a total commitment of three years to the Board of Directors of

MODE. The President-Elect will automatically succeed to the office of President (one year

term) and immediate Past-President (one year term) following his/her term as President-

Elect. Must be an active member of MODE and the American Association of Diabetes

Educators.

Expected leadership tasks

Ongoing initiation of conversation with various members to encourage potential leaders,

committee members and active region members; regular/ongoing personal communication

via phone calls, emails, cards, face-to-face interaction. Specifically need to consider

potential candidates to succeed to President-Elect position, as well as

identifying/mentoring future committee chairs.

Specific responsibilities

During the term as President-Elect:

1. Prepare, throughout the year, to assume the responsibilities of the President.

2. Participate in all meetings of the Board of Directors, Executive Committee and general

membership.

3. Submit written report of activities quarterly (2 weeks prior to each Board meeting) via

email to president and administrative assistant.

4. Perform the role of Parliamentarian. The book entitled “Robert’s Rules of Order” will be

passed on to each consecutive officer annually.

5. Assume the duties of the President in the absence of the President.

6. Communicate and coordinate needs and concerns of the Regions of MODE. These

activities may include:

a. Convening with the Region Representatives a minimum of twice annually.

b. Using region structure as a mechanism to:

• Communicate MODE activities to regions and their respective representatives.

• Solicit involvement of region membership in MODE activities.

c. Assisting regions with issues related to local and national diabetes education.

7. Serve as a member of the MODE Finance and Nomination Committees.

8. Perform such other duties as assigned by the Bylaws or Board of Directors.

9. Attend AADE Leadership Conference or send a representative from the Executive

Board.

10. Assist lead-chairs of all committees (except Nomination Committee) in selecting new

co-chairs. (note: outgoing President appoints incoming chair of Nominations

Committee)



Just prior to succeeding to the office of the President in preparation for Transition

Meeting:

1. Assure annual review and update of all position (job) descriptions for accuracy in

preparation for orientation of new board.

2. Identify all committee chairpersons for term as President.

3. Review current Liaisons and recommend any needed changes to the Board for

approval.

4. Ensure orientation materials are provided to each new Board Member (i.e. manual,

new board member packet, etc.)



During the Transition Meeting:

1. Ensure all new board members sign the Duality of Interest form.

2. Revise “Welcome to Board” letter as needed and distribute packet to new members at

Transition Meeting.

3. Develop Strategic Plan for term as President.
