children with acute and chronic kidney disease, kidney stones, glomerular
disease, cystic renal diseases, tubular disorders, fluid and electrolyte
abnormalities, hypertension, congenital renal disorders, hereditary renal
diseases, along with common pediatric diagnosis (such as urinary tract
infection, hematuria and proteinuria).
Pediatric Dialysis Program: providing acute and chronic peritoneal dialysis,
home dialysis training, and acute in-center hemodialysis services [acute
hemodialysis (HD), continuous veno-venous hemofiltration (CVVH),
continuous veno-venous hemodialysis (CVVHD), and other modalities of
continuous renal replacement therapy].
Chronic Renal Failure Program: in this clinic we follow children with chronic
renal failure in pre dialysis stage and comprehensively address the issues
surrounding pediatric Chronic Kidney Disease including discussion of the
therapeutic options for End-Stage Renal Disease (hemodialysis, peritoneal
dialysis and transplantation) to ensure educated choices and timely referrals.
Diagnostics Services: with our state-of-the-art technology, we are able to
provide conveniently on an outpatient basis, comprehensive laboratory and
histopathological tests, radiological studies, and procedures like percutaneous
kidney biopsy, with real-time ultrasound guidance. These enable us to

medical students and pediatric residents in KFMC children hospital. Members
of the section participate in public and professional education, national and
international nephrology conferences.
Clinical Research Program: in order for progress to be made in the clinical
and pathogenetic understanding of childhood kidney disease, we believe that
clinical research about kidney disorders, hypertension, dialysis and
transplantation should be available for our patients.
We are developing a data registry for patient with chronic renal failure, those
on dialysis and other chronic renal disorders, our efforts in conducting clinical
studies focus on ways to improve the care provided to our patients.
Our multi-disciplinary team work together closely in partnership with patients and
their families to reach the best level of physical, social and emotional health, and
improve the quality of life for our patients.
Our team consist of pediatric nephrologists, clinical nurse, three pediatric dialysis
nurses who are well versed in all dialysis modalities, including continuous
hemofiltration, hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis, a dietitian who assists children
in receiving proper nutrition to achieve optimal growth, and a social worker who
helps with emotional and practical needs such as finding appropriate resources,
handling the stress of the illness, dealing with financial problems and also assist in
We also work collaboratively with our colleagues in the Department of Pediatric
Surgery and Urology to provide a multidisciplinary approach to the care of children
with congenital anomalies of the kidneys and the urinary tract.
Our Near Future Plans
Pediatric Renal Transplant program: currently we provide follow-up to
children who have received a kidney transplant in other centers with future
plan to start our renal transplant program with collaboration with pediatric
surgery and urology department.
Pediatric Hypertension program: with plan to have the ability to perform 24
hours ambulatory blood pressure studies in children.
Outreach program : with the vision that a specialized nephrology care should
be available to all children who live far away, we are planning to expand our
services and opening clinics in these areas

End Stage Renal Disease and Peritoneal Dialysis Program
With the special needs of children with chronic renal disease in mind, this program
designed for both children and their families to promote understanding the disease
progression, to provide close monitoring and medical management, to discuss
different dialysis options and what is the best option for each child, to ensure timely
educated choices are made, to give independence through training for home dialysis,

the stress of chronic illness, emotional and practical needs through appropriate
Our expert bilingual dialysis nurses will answer all the queries, and technical
problems that may arise at home dialysis to every family and provide them with
simple Arabic easy to understand hand outs about kidney diseases, nutritional

Dialysis and pre-dialysis patients will be prepared for future kidney transplantation,
by optimizing family and patient education about transplantation modalities, benefit
of live related donation, and pre-emptive transplantation, assuring updated
evaluations including urologic, infectious, vaccination, cardiac, and antibody status.
All our dialysis patients are enrolled in the transplant list at the Saudi Center for
