SUMMARY: The Whatcom County Public Works Director directs the administration of the Public
Works Department and is accountable for the efficient and effective performance of the
Department and the preparation of timely and professional service advice, analyses and reports as
a basis for planning, funding and implementation of policy. Responsible for planning, organizing,
directing, coordinating and evaluating the efforts of staff (170 FTEs), working in the areas of
engineering, road maintenance and operations, design and construction, river and flood, solid
waste, stormwater, hydraulic and environmental projects, equipment services, Lummi Island Ferry,
and weed control.

Works with Departments of Planning & Development Services and Health on ongoing
implementation of the Permit Development Services Center.

Provides leadership in the planning and building of a new Administrative facility for Public Works
and Planning and Development Services within the next two years.

QUALIFICATIONS: Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Public
Administration or a related field, AND a minimum of six years of progressively responsible
experience in the area of public works with at least three years in a supervisory/management
capacity. A Master’s degree in Business Administration, Public Administration or related field is
