SOUTH AFRICA
South Africa, resting at the bottom of the enormous African Continent, is a land of great diversity
and beauty: tropical coastlines and arid deserts; carpets of dazzling daisies and the Big Five;
proud tradition and first-class infrastructure.
South Africa caters for all, from a truly African safari in Kruger National Park, to gourmet fare in
the cosmopolitan and breathtakingly beautiful Cape Town.
Hike through dramatic mountains in the Drakensberg or taste a variety of wines at the elegant,
colonial wine estates of the Cape. Accommodation in South Africa is as unique and varied as its
landscape; you can enjoy luxury lodges in remote wilderness areas, beach front hotels or even
intimate guest-houses located in the heart of wine country.
If you have a taste for adventure, South Africa offers adrenaline junkies diving with great white
sharks, river rafting on the Fish River and the highest bungee jump in the world on the Garden
Route.
It was Archbishop Desmond Tutu who coined the phrase “the Rainbow Nation" to describe the
melting pot of people and cultures living together in South Africa. Let the friendly and enthusiastic
local people teach you about the country that they love.
South Africa has come a long way since her first democratic elections in 1994 and the pride in
this achievement is palpable and the enthusiasm for the future is contagious.
Victoria Falls
Victoria Falls has an impressive list of credentials; the widest curtain of falling water on earth, a
UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of only seven natural wonders on the planet.
Often, when there's so much hype about a place, you prepare yourself for a slight let down. This
is definitely not the case with Vic Falls.
Imagine the impact of a river measuring nearly two kilometres in width, becoming a fraction of
that in a matter of seconds. This dramatically beautiful event is accompanied by a deafening roar
and fine spray that arcs up into the sky, which explains the falls' Shona name, Mosi-oa-Tunya,
meaning the "Smoke that Thunders”.
But Victoria Falls is more than a magical show of the force of nature. Africa's undisputed
adventure capital, it tops the list for adrenaline junkies the world over.
Add to this some excellent reserves, leisurely river cruises, elephant-back safaris and helicopter
flips, and it's easy to see why Victoria Falls is one of the top destinations.
There is a wide choice of Victoria Falls accommodation, ranging from river cottages on the
banks of the Zambezi, to safari lodges on private game reserves, to large colonial-style resorts
within sight of fall's huge plume of spray. Each has its unique advantages and features.
The falls are on the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia and the towns of Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe)
and Livingstone (Zambia) offer you easy access and plenty of accommodation. The border
crossing is relatively quick and easy, allowing you to sample the best of both worlds.
Sun City
Sun City is internationally renowned as one of the world's most exotic and extravagant
holiday resorts.
By day, the resort is a year-round summer paradise - with golf courses, paragliding, game
viewing and an artificial beach and waterpark. At night it's a glitzy hub of restaurants, a casino
and spectacular shows.
Sun City is also home to the Palace of the Lost City, undoubtedly the most extravagant five star
hotel on the continent. The Palace takes the idea of a lost civilization and turns it into an exotic
fantasy world complete with high domed ceilings, lavish African furnishings in every corner and
massive hotel rooms.
The resort sprawls out over a massive area encompassing four hotels. Each hotel features lush
tropical gardens, walking trails and massive swimming pools.
Golf enthusiasts have two world class courses to choose from - complete with crocodiles at
the water hazards. Less sporty types can enjoy spa treatments, beautiful swimming pools and
cocktail menus the length of romance novels.
The Pilanesberg National Park is a short drive away so you can easily include game viewing in
your day's activities.
A waterpark called the Valley of Waves is the hub of activity during the day. It sports an artificial
beach lapped by the mechanically-generated waves of an artificial ocean. Kids run around
jumping, climbing, and running from water-slide to pool to water-slide while adults laze on the
beach, sipping drinks under the hot African sun.
Over the years, Sun City has provided a holiday haven in which parents can unwind as their
kids are run about in a safe and secure environment. If you're looking for a few relaxing and
uncomplicated days away, then Sun City is a must-do.
Kruger National Park
As one of Africa's top three safari destinations, the Kruger offers visitors the iconic African
safari - a dramatic production rich in lion prides, elephant herds and thousands of other animals,
played out against shifting backdrops of savannah, forest, river and mountain.
Travellers arrive from all over the world for a taste of the Kruger Park safari experience - a safari
holiday characterised by unspoilt wilderness, a huge density and diversity of animals, and
private luxury accommodation that rivals (and often surpasses) the world's best hotels.
If you can afford to, what you really want to do when coming to the Kruger is to stay in one of the
private reserves that shares unfenced borders with the park, or in one of the private concessions
within the Kruger Park. For a truly decadent experience visit the Sabi Sands.
In these exclusive areas, private lodges offer luxury accommodation in unique wilderness
settings, private game drives that get you as close as possible to wild animals, and a variety of
additional activities ranging from bush walks to spa treatments.
Have a bubble bath in your luxury suite perched on a cliff-face and overlooking a forested valley;
go out on an off-road game drive and park in the middle of a pride of lions as they feast on a fresh
kill; enjoy dinner under the stars, as the wine flows and the fire blazes, then retire to the comfort
of your king-sized bed's cool, crisp linen.
If you prefer doing things on your own steam, you can plan your own Kruger holiday. There is a
wide variety of self-catering accommodation available within the park although the emphasis here
is on clean, comfortable facilities rather than luxury.
The Kruger Park was originally designed for self-drive and self-catering holidays, and there is an
excellent network of dirt and tar roads that allows visitors to explore the massive park for days
on end.
Whichever way you chose to experience the Kruger Park, you will leave completely refreshed,
having enjoyed a Kruger National Park safari experience full of wildlife sightings in a
wilderness that's almost certain to tempt you into quitting your office job and moving to the bush.
Garden Route
Garden Route, spread out along the coast like a giant natural theme park, is a rich tapestry of
very large trees, freshwater lakes and some big mountains.
Whether you are paragliding over sandy white beaches, spotting dolphins and whales from the air
or cruising the deep blue ocean; it's a place where nature rules, and it does so beautifully.
While outdoor activities take centre stage in this natural theatre, fine food and drink are always at
hand - this is South Africa's oyster capital after all.
With some of the country's best beaches and a climate that is perfectly suited to playing
outdoors, the Garden Route has long established itself as South Africa's most popular tourist
destination after Cape Town.
Garden Route accommodation is plentiful in these parts with everything from five star luxury
to clear-starred camping sites. There is something for all tastes and pockets, but you do want to
pre-book in season as this region is extremely popular with locals and international visitors.

GEOGRAPHY:
The Republic of South Africa lies at the southern end of the African continent. It is bounded by the
Indian Ocean to the east and the Atlantic Ocean to the west, and is bordered to the north by
Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Swaziland and totally encloses Lesotho. South
Africa has three major geographical regions, namely plateau, mountains and the coastal belt. The
high plateau has sharp escarpments which rise above the plains, or veld. Despite two major river
systems, the Limpopo and the Orange, most of the plateau lacks surface water. Along the
coastline are sandy beaches and rocky coves, and the vegetation is shrublike. The mountainous
regions which run along the coastline from the Cape of Good Hope to the Limpopo Valley in the
northeast of the country are split into the Drakensberg, Nuweveldberg and Stormberg ranges.
Following the 1994 elections, South Africa was organised into nine regions. These comprise the
Western Cape with its provincial and national capital of Cape Town, the Eastern Cape with its
provincial capital of Bisho, the Northern Cape with its provincial capital of Kimberley, KwaZulu-
Natal with its provincial capital of Pietermaritzburg, the Free State with its provincial capital of
Bloemfontein, the North West Province with its provincial capital of Mmabatho, Limpopo (formerly
called the Northern Province) with its provincial capital of Polokwane (formerly called
Pietersburg), Mpumalanga with its provincial capital of Nelspruit, and Gauteng with its provincial
capital of Johannesburg.
Government:
South Africa has held three successful national elections as well as local polls since the first
genuinely inclusive national election in South Africa, which was held in February 1994. Thabo
Mbeki was elected by Parliament to a second five-year term in April 2004, following the landslide
general election victory of his ruling African National Congress (ANC). Mr Mbeki took over as
President when Nelson Mandela stepped down in mid-1999. Mbeki’s administration is struggling
with two major domestic problems – a huge violent crime wave and an HIV-AIDS pandemic,
which afflicts over 10 per cent of the adult population. Mbeki’s persistent refusal to come to terms
with the true nature of the HIV virus has drawn massive international criticism as well as being the
subject of furious arguments between Mbeki and Mandela.
Language:
The official languages are Afrikaans, English, isiNdebele, isiXhosa, isiZulu, Sepedi, Sesotho,
Setswana, Siswati, Tshivenda and Xitsonga.
Religion:
Most inhabitants profess Christianity of some form and belong to either Catholic, Anglican and
other protestant denominations, Afrikaner Calvinist churches or African independent churches.
There are also significant Hindu, Muslim and Jewish communities, and traditional beliefs are still
practised widely, sometimes in conjunction with Christianity.
Electricity:
220/240 volts AC; 250 volts AC (Pretoria), 50Hz. Three-pin round plugs are in use.
Social Conventions:
Handshaking is the usual form of greeting. Normal courtesies should be shown when visiting
someone’s home. Casual wear is widely acceptable. Formal social functions often call for a
dinner jacket and black tie for men and full-length dresses for women; this will be specified on the
invitation. Smoking is prohibited in public buildings and on public transport.
MAP:
Climate:
South Africa’s climate is generally sunny and pleasant. Winters are usually mild, although snow
falls on the mountain ranges of the Cape and Natal and occasionally in lower-lying areas, when a
brief cold spell can be expected throughout the country.
Required clothing: Lightweight cottons and linens and rainwear. Warmer clothes are needed for
winter.
Currency:
Currency: Rand (ZAR) = 100 cents. Notes are in denominations of ZAR200, 100, 50, 20 and 10.
Coins are in denominations of ZAR5, 2 and 1, and 50, 20, 10, 5, 2 and 1 cents.

larger shops and restaurants. Automated foreign exchange machines and ATMs are available at
various locations. Proof of identify may be requested; therefore, it is advisable to carry a passport.
Credit & debit cards: MasterCard and Visa are preferred. American Express and Diners Club
are also widely accepted. Some ATMs will give cash advances with credit cards. Credit cards are
not accepted at petrol stations. Check with your credit or debit card company for details of
merchant acceptability and other facilities which may be available.
Traveller's cheques: Valid at banks, hotels, restaurants and shops. To avoid additional
exchange rate charges, travellers are advised to take traveller's cheques in Pounds Sterling or

city itself, we visit the Company Gardens, the S.A. Museum, the Castle of Good
Hope and the vibrant and arty flea market, Greenmarket Square. We take a trip
through the picturesque Bo-Kaap.
Table Mountain
By the late 1870's, several of Cape Town's more prominent citizens had suggested
the introduction of a railway line to the top of Table Mountain. Plans to implement a
proposed rack railway got under way but the outbreak of the Anglo-Boer war put a
halt to these efforts. By 1912, with a strong desire to gain easy access to the top of
Table Mountain, the Cape Town City Council commissioned an engineer to
investigate the various options for public transport to the top. The new cableway
was officially opened on the 4th of October 1997, the anniversary of the original
launch, almost 70 years previously.
The Company Gardens
The Company Gardens have been described as „an oasis of calm in the city rush‟,
and with the trees, the squirrels and lunch-hour love birds it‟s easy to forget that
you‟re in the middle of one of Africa‟s most important cities. Spots of interest include
a sundial dating from 1787, a Saffren Pear Tree (believed to be South Africa‟s
oldest cultivated tree), a statue of Cecil John Rhodes, a rose garden and pools with
brightly coloured fish. The South African National Gallery, the South African
Museum and the Planetarium are situated within the grounds of the Company
Gardens.
South African Museum
This was founded in 1825. In 1897 the Museum moved to its present building in the
historic Company Gardens. Since then millions of visitors have wandered its halls
and corridors to be stimulated and inspired by its collections and exhibitions. They
have left the Museum with a better understanding of the earth and its biological and
cultural diversity, past and present.
Castle of Good Hope
Built between 1666 and 1679, the Castle is the oldest surviving building in
South Africa. The Castle was, however, not the first fort to be built at the Cape. A
quadrangular fort was built after the arrival of Jan van Riebeeck in 1652, where the
Grand Parade and the main Post Office are situated today. In 1936 the Castle was
declared a National Monument. The Castle of Good Hope houses the military
personnel of the SA army in the Western Cape, the famous William Fehr Collection
of historic artworks, the Castle Military Museum and ceremonial facilities for
traditional Cape Regiments.
--------- The Bo-Kaap
A look at the picturesque “Malay Quarter”, dynamic living cultural museum and
home to the oldest mosque in the Southern Hemisphere. We discover the
unique culture, lifestyle and personality of the Cape Muslim community and
their contribution to South Africa‟s development.

DAY 8 : FULL DAY WINELANDS TOUR
This delightful drive winds its way to the heart of the Cape Winelands, through
superb mountain ranges, vineyards and Cape Dutch homesteads.
The tour commences at 08:30. Head off to the wine-country via the N1 to one of
the Cape‟s first farming districts – Paarl. The town is set at the foot of the cluster
of remarkable granite domes from which it takes its name. Our first stop of the
morning is the picturesque Seidelberg Wine Estate. Established in 1692 under the
name Den Leuwenjagt, Seidelberg offers one of the most spectacular settings in
the Cape Winelands. An informative cellar tour and wine tasting gives visitors
personalised insight into the finer points of wine-making.
Proceed to the town of Franschoek, historically dating back to the 17 th century
when the French Huguenots arrived. Billed as the Gourmet Capital of South Africa,
this charming town, in a most picturesque valley, retains a French Huguenot style.
Franschoek complements the artistry of its chefs and winemakers with the
breathtaking beauty of its setting. We enjoy a wine tasting at one of the numerous
wine estates in the area, before taking time to enjoy the fabled culinary skills of the
chefs at one of the many award winning restaurants.
Onward to Stellenbosch, via the scenic Helshoogte Pass, the heart of the South
African wine Industry, boasting great beauty and culture that is steeped in South
African history. Walk down the canal-lined avenues, in the shade of giant oak trees
and beautifully preserved historic buildings. Coffee shops, galleries, antique shops
and wine bars spill onto the sidewalks. An air of quiet intellectualism and wine-
making history abounds in this university town. With the sheer vastness of wine
estates on offer, we are truly spoilt for choice when we enjoy our final wine tasting

DAY 7: FULL DAY CITY TOWN CITY TOUR
Situated below Table Mountain, Devil‟s Peak and Lion‟s Head, Cape Town
offers a rich cultural and industrial heritage, grand splendour and an assurance
of activity of excitement at the V&A Waterfront. Including all the `must -sees` of
any Cape Town day tour, this option is a geographical and cultural
extravaganza, showing you Cape Town, from its historical beginnings to the
dazzling modern shopping malls of the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront.
The tour commences with a tour of Table Mountain (weather permitting). In the
city itself, we visit the Company Gardens, the S.A.
We discover the
unique culture, lifestyle and personality of the Cape Muslim community and
their contribution to South Africa‟s development.

name Den Leuwenjagt, Seidelberg offers one of the most spectacular settings in
the Cape Winelands. An informative cellar tour and wine tasting gives visitors
