WELCOME SWIMMERS AND PARENTS

The Redding Swim Team invites you to join our swimming family. The Redding

Swim Team is one of 53 teams in Northern California, and is a member of United

States Swimming, a national organization with over 750,000 athletes across the

country.

Serving Shasta County since 1952, our swim team provides four programs:

Redding Aqua Ducks (RAD), Swim America, Redding Summer Ducks, and Redding

Adult Swimming. These programs are instructional and educational for people of all

ages. Swimmers learn proper swimming techniques, importance of physical fitness,

and the rewards of commitment.

The objective of the Redding Swim Team is to provide physical, emotional and

social growth of swimmers through training and competition. Swimmers learn the

value of hard work and the importance of good sportsmanship. The RAD coaching

staff provides an atmosphere where each individual swimmer has the opportunity to

reach their full potential by instilling a sense of confidence and self-esteem.

ABOVE ALL, RAD SWIMMERS LEARN THAT COMPETITIVE SWIMMING IS FUN!

MARK WAGNER: HEAD COACH

Mark serves as the Head Coach and the Chief Executive Officer for the Redding Swim Team. Mark

works with the Platinum and National swimmers. He is a former College All-American Swimmer who

has been coaching since 1985. He has coached all levels of swimming in the areas of recreational,

high school and U.S.A. swim teams before coming to Redding in September of 1996. He is the

Shasta College Swim Coach since 2005.

In addition, the American Swimming Coaches Association certifies Mark as a level 4 coach. His

certification places him in the top 5% in the nation. Since that time, our Team has set over 100 new

team records and has qualified swimmers for the Age Group Western Zone Meet, Junior Nationals,

and Senior Nationals. Mark also serves on the Board of Directors of Sierra Nevada Swimming.

MIKE BARKER: ASSISTANT COACH

Mike works with the Gold and Silver swimmers as well as coaching Masters two days per week. Mike was a

competitive swimmer with this team from 82-86 and also from 94-96. He has a passion for competitive

swimming that he likes to bring to the pool deck. He also coached Enterprise HS for two years, the Head

Coach of the Humboldt Swim Team and has coached in Sacramento for the Spare Time Aquatics. He has

been coaching in California since 1995. He loves coaching all ages of swimmers and is very excited about

being a RAD coach.

BETH HEIBEL: ASSISTANT COACH

Beth works with the Gold and Bronze swimmers as well as the Summer Ducks. Beth grew up in San Diego

where she swam in high school and junior college, was a lifeguard and taught swim lessons. She began her

coaching career as a Foothill HS coach from 2001-2005. Beth joined the Redding Swim Team in 2001 as the

Age Group Assistant and was named Novice Head Coach in January 2006. Her forte and love is teaching

new swimmers. Beth is a member of the American Swimming Coaches Association and is a certified Level 2

Coach. She is a graduate of San Diego State University with a B.A. in Physical Education with a teaching

option.

RAD’S TEAM STRUCTURE

The focus of the Redding Swim Team is the long-term development of each athlete. Our program

covers swimmers from the very beginning levels of learning to swim to the elite athlete competing at

the National level. Our groups overlap in age and ability to accommodate each swimmer’s need.

Swimmers are placed into groups based upon their desire, ability and age (maturity) as determined

by the coach and the athlete.

The goal of the Redding Swim Team is to meet the needs of all swimmers and to ensure each

participant receives the attention they deserve. The criteria for each level are as follows:

GREEN GROUP

This is our Swim America Program (learn to swim). Our goal is to develop confidence in the water

so that your child can learn to swim quickly. It is a development school for participants. Swimmers

in this group are 3 years of age and older. Coach to student ratio is typically 1 to 5.

BRONZE GROUP

This is an introductory group with an emphasis on stroke mechanics, turns and start techniques.

At this level, concentration will be on the fundamentals of the four competitive strokes, and the

enjoyment of swimming while improving swimming skills.

SILVER GROUP

This level’s emphasis is stroke skills, turns and start techniques. This group is an introduction to

competitive swimming. The emphasis of this group is learning all four of the competitive strokes

and turn techniques. Although competing in swim meets is not required, practices are designed to

help the swimmers meet their competitive goals

GOLD TEAM

Swimmers should be proficient in all four competitive strokes, turns, and techniques. This group is

for swimmers interested in preparing for competition, and who are willing and capable of handling

progressive workouts. Stroke skills and interval training will be stressed for these swimmers. Swim

meet participation is highly encouraged.

PLATINUM GROUP

This group is a stepping-stone for the National Team. Swimmers in this group focus on improving

their competitive proficiency and performance. The emphasis is stroke skills and interval swim

training. Swim meets are encouraged for these participants. This group focuses primarily on proper

technique of the four competitive strokes, starts and turns, and improving skills and conditioning for

the sport of swimming.

NATIONAL TEAM

This level requires a serious commitment to the sport of swimming. The emphasis will be on

extensive training for a high level of competition. It is offered to swimmers who are willing and

capable of handling progressive workouts. This group will participate in morning workouts and

weekly weight room sessions.

MASTERS

This is a group of adults who are interested in swimming as part of their physical fitness program. We can

meet the needs of the Tri Athlete or someone looking for low impact physical fitness. The staff will provide

workouts for swimmers, or they can lap swim on their own. This group’s emphasis is on meeting the needs of

its participants.

RAD’S GROUP PRE-REQUISITES AND GUIDELINES

The following guidelines are used by the RAD Coaching Staff when assigning a swimmer to a

specific group. In order to provide a well-rounded program for all the participants we offer five swim

levels. Bronze swimmers are considered an introductory group; Silver swimmers are in a

transitional group preparing them for the Gold Team. Gold swimmers are working on advanced

training. The Platinum Group is a group for kids that play other sports and/or a transitional group

for the National Team. The National Team swimmers are the top group of the Redding Swim

Team. Swimmers are placed into groups based upon their desire, ability and age (maturity). Each

child will be placed into the group that best suits their ability as determined by the coach and the

athlete.
