Philosophy of Education Statement
I grew up in a private school atmosphere. Kindergarten through 8th grade I went to a Lutheran school
and I went to a Catholic high school. I grew up in a small class environment where everyone knew
everyone. You saw your teachers and classmates not only at school but also at church and after school
sporting events. I was close to a lot of my teachers and some of them I still talk to and confide in today.
My schooling experience was on a more personal level and if you needed help there was always
someone around to ask. I learned the same subjects as other kids but I wasn’t able to take any college
courses during high school like some schools offer. I had AP classes but that was it. I truly liked being
private schooled but sometimes I do wish I could have experienced public school so that I now would
understand a little bit more about it.
I believe that the goal of education is to teach every student the information they need to know and to
help out those who may not understand it as well as everyone else. I believe that everyone child learns
differently and that my responsibility as a teacher is to make sure everyone is on the same learning
level. Mastering the core knowledge of the subject is not only key to the teacher but to the students as
well. Another goal of education is that learning should be fun and enjoyable. Students should love to
learn!! Information and technology are what this world runs off of and if there are not any students who
want to learn about the ever changing world then our world as we know it will end. Self actualization is a
great goal of education. Teaching children to realize their own potential will help them learn more
efficiently and help them learn to be successful.
The role of the teacher can be many things. I see my role as a teacher as being an organizer, mentor,
helper, information collector, and an amazing educator. Teachers need organization to function and
keep their classroom working efficiently. A teacher should want to mentor and help their students
become knowledgeable and successful. Collecting information not only for yourself to help you teach
your lessons but also for the students such as handouts to help them study is a great way to make
learning more enjoyable. Teachers should not only teach their students but learn from them as well.
My philosophical approach to teaching is that of an executive, a humanist, and a classicist combined. I
agree and disagree with aspects from all three of the approaches. Some sample activities that I would
use in my classroom are hands on games and experiments, worksheets, labs, group work, and extra
credit assignments. Anything to keep my students alert and willing to learn is what I will use in my
classroom.
My classroom environment is going to be one that is conducive to learning, fun and enjoyable for
everyone. I want my students to walk into my classroom and know that they are going to have an
amazing learning experience. Classroom management is very important to me. Addressing problems as
they happen and not ignoring them is how I want to run my class. I will have set rules and procedures
for all students to know and understand. I want to be able to walk my classroom and have every student
know that I am watching them making sure they are staying on task and not causing distractions. When
it comes to a grading system or style I have always liked the bell curve method. I believe that giving
extra credit points has always been a good motivator for students to study hard and know the material.
Motivators are great and help make grading easier; like, giving out stickers to everyone who makes an A
on a test or giving bonus points on assignments for those who came ready and prepared for class that
day. Different motivators like those always made me want to study harder and pay attention in class.
My goals as a teacher are that I not only want to be a great respected teacher but also a mentor and
role model to my students. I want to make science fun, hands-on, and creative. I want to motivate my
students to believe in themselves and find their true potentials in life. Professionally I want to not only
be a certified science teacher but also a certified math teacher. I love math too and think I would be
great at teaching it. I want to motivate my students to continue their education and go to college. I want
to enjoy teaching so that I will be able to teach and help out my students for the rest of my life.
