Trek “The Origin of Earth” A NEW 2008 ITINERARY!

“A deep Exploration of the secret volcanic highlands”

11 days from Reykjavik to Reykjavik – (13 days with Westman Islands) – 10 days hiking with

lightweight day pack - 4x4 support vehicle –Simple overnight accommodations and expedition

camping- Difficulty level moderate to difficult - 6 to 8 hours hiking daily – Non-technical -

International participants – English, French and Scandinavian speaking guide - maximum 9

participants

This grand trek of 11 days, 10 days of hiking carrying only day packs takes place in the heart of the

most out of this world volcanic high ground you can imagine. l’Öræfi, between the fault line of

Eldgjá to the east and the volcano of Mt Hekla to the west and crossing the caldera of Torfajökull /

Hrafntinnusker, the trek takes us along some of the most secret passages of this spectacular

volcanic rift. Occasionally stopping over two consecutive nights in a refuge, or campsite we'll be

better able to get a closer look at the intriguing landscape that surrounds us. The pace of the

itinerary unfolds at a slightly higher level of adventure as compared to the grand treks of north west

Öræfi. Except for the contents of our day packs, everything else is transported by our 4x4 support

vehicle, which will take the rare and tortuous tracks laid out before in order to meet the group by

afternoon. Our agility and small group size will allow us to cover lots of ground, all the while

though, with the pleasure of a comfortable pace. At these high latitudes, camping is a a real treat

during favorable weather. However, when bad weather is leading the dance, this too becomes an

"unforgettable" experience. This too is a reason to include nights in a refuge where these are found

on our path. Inexistent only a few years ago, or in grave states of disrepair, these refuges and

former shelters that all hikers bless in times of foul weather as well as good weather have been

restored and are always located in magical places.

The relative isolation of this trip requires that each of the participants be in optimal physical

condition and have an openness to lend a hand in some of the daily chores related to setting up

camp and making the experience as comfortable as possible. These may include helping the guide

with meals, clean up, camp breakdown etc...This trek is especially designed for those who desire a

full immersion in the pristine nature with the discovery of landscapes that are beyond imagination.

ITINERARY: (B: breakfast – L: lunch - D: dinner)

Day 1 : Meet your guide and depart by transfer vehicle along the southern coast via the hamlet

town of Vik, or by way of the Fjallabak track via Landmannalaugar. Arrival by end of the afternoon

in the highlands of the Skaftá district (L-D)

Day 2: Explore the eastern side of the d’Eldgjá fault, (the gorge of fire) the largest fault capable of

erupting on the face of the planet. (B-L-D)

Day 3: Continue along the fault, but now in a westerly direction, we reach the limits of the land

mass containing the caldera of Torfajökull. Of course, we cannot resist taking a hot spring bath in a

nearby hot water source. (B-L-D)

Day 4 : Proceed to the shores of the long and narrow Holmsárlón lake. We reach the place

nicknamed the red baptismal fountain--This out of the ordinary turquoise colored lake Holmsárlón

with the waterfalls at the end of the lake plunging into the red crater is a sight to behold.(B-L-D)

Day 5: We cross the sands of Maelifellsand on which the enormous glacial dome of Myrdalsjökull

gradually disappears with gentle slope of the mountain. In the middle of this strange black flatness

stands the solitary cone of Maelifell, covered in fluorescent-colored moss. We are able to explore

the extraordinary landscapes between the southern flank of the Torfajökull caldera and the glacial

dome of Myrdalsjökull. (B-L-D)

Day 6: We continue along the southern flank of the Hrafntinnusker caldera / Torfajökull across the

gentle, grassy valleys and marshes. Base camp on the light-colored sedimentary stretches on the

banks of the River Ljósa , so called the river of light. (B-L-D)

Day 7: Explore the Hrafntinnusker caldera: It's like being on another planet! Out of this world multi-

colored landscape of volcanic activity, countless fumaroles, spouting hot bubbles of mud, streams

of pure obsidian, marshes, clear lakes and glacial domes disappearing out of sight. (B-L-D)

Day 8: We head northwest and cross the vast stretches of black volcanic ash and lava fields that

encircle the monolithic Mt Krakatindur towards the Hekla volcano. (B-L-D)

Day 9: We begin the climb of the famous volcano. 5-6 hours round trip. If the weather is not in our

favor, or if the volcano, following latest reports, is too unstable to approach, we will follow the west

flank across a vast stretch of black slag traced and broken by a chaos of petrified lava rivers. We'll

regain vegetation and inhabited lands by nightfall. (B-L-D)

Day 10: On the west flank of Mt Hekla we reach the edge of land inhabited by the first of the small

farms. (B-L-D)

Day 11: Transfer by bus across southern lands reaching our destination, Reykjavik by late

morning. (Departure by ferry boat for those who are extending their trip to the Westman Islands.)

(B)

Itinerary may be slightly modified, especially before the middle of July or in September. The

duration of the daily hike are only indicative and can be shorter or longer depending on weather,

on terrain condition and on average shape of the group.

any degree deemed necessary by the guide(s). These changes are however rare as they

only become necessary due to weather and safety concerns. These include; volcanic

Our vehicles are also in radio contact with our base in Reykjavik should this become
