Ohio EPA Issues More Than $300,000 Loan to Uhrichsville
A low-interest loan of $330,876 will help Uhrichsville separate sewers into two separate systems, one
to convey sanitary sewage and one to transport storm water. The loan comes from Ohio EPA's Water
Pollution Control Loan Fund.
Ohio EPA has awarded Uhrichsville $330,876 of the $892,977 necessary for the separation and
upgrade. A $450,000 grant from the Ohio Public Works Commission, $84,101 in local reserves and a
$28,000 grant from the Community Development Block Grant will complete the grant. Ohio EPA's 20-
year, low-interest loan will save the village $271,980 in interest when compared to a market-rate loan.
Combined sewers allow rain water and snow melt to mix with sewage. It is not uncommon for these
combined flows to overwhelm treatment systems and discharge directly to streams. Uhrichsville
residents have experienced raw sewage backups into basements. Separating the two sewers will
allow for all sewage to be treated, while allowing storm water to flow through.
Since 1989, the Water Pollution Control Loan Fund has awarded more than $3.8 billion in low-cost
financing for a wide variety of water quality actions. Municipalities, private organizations and
individuals have received assistance for projects such as wastewater system improvements,
agricultural pollution control practices, home sewage system upgrades, contaminated site cleanups,
and stream restoration and protection. The fund has saved borrowers more than $966 million in
interest expense.
Ohio EPA directs the loan program and evaluates the proposed projects. The Ohio Water
Development Authority manages the program's loan accounts and issues bonds to ensure financing is
available.
