Watering
All plants need more attention to watering the first month or so after planting. Check soil moisture on a
regular schedule.
Wet means soggy, an area where it is naturally damp, especially in spring.
Moist usually requires a good high organic soil, watered regularly in times of drought.
Medium would be a garden that gets watered during a drought of 5 days or more with good organic soil.
Dry loving plants usually need good drainage, and a corse soil. Rock gardens and any garden on a hill would be
examples.
An index of common names is available on the web site, www.mitsperennials.com
Below each plant we have provided information on zone, size etc. The information is as acurate as
possible, based on what suppliers provide combined with our own research. All of our plants are
acurately labeled and every effort is made to ensure they are true to name. Many of the plants are
available in larger sizes, and later in the season only larger sizes may be available.

Hosta Hosta ◐ c
Acid tolerant. Not Deer Resistant. watering medium
Care: Cut down late fall or early spring.
Hostas are garden favorites for their interesting leaves and beautiful flowers. Many people like to collect one of
each variety. For a more soothing effect, several of one kind will look better. Blue Hostas need deep shade to
develop the characteristic waxy blue. Yellow leaved Hosta require more sunlight to stay yellow. When mixing
varieties of Hosta attention should be given to final size. Sizes range from the miniatures at 10cm (4inch) to the
extra large at over 100cm (40inch). Hostas prefer alkaline soil and will benefit from a handful of dolometic lime
in the spring, especially if they are being grown under evergreens. This has the added benefit of deterring slugs,
which can be a problem. Other slug repellants include; Safers slug bait (an organic product which will not harm
birds or pets), copper (try pennies or wire), pine needles, amonia mixed in a 10% solution sprayed in the
evenings and yeast mixed with water and sugar left as bait. Hostas are relatively drought tolerant, however they
should be watered regularly the first year or two after planting. Many Hostas take 5 to 7 years to reach mature
size. (hoty means Hosta of the year)
