Match background
Arsenal FC scored 11 goals in their previous two UEFA Champions League home group fixtures and will need to
rediscover their scoring touch when FK Partizan visit to make certain of their place in the last 16.
• The Gunners won their first three fixtures but defeats at FC Shakhtar Donetsk and SC Braga have left their hopes
hanging in the balance. Now Arsène Wenger's team have to beat Partizan to make sure of reaching the last 16 for
the 11th successive season.
• Partizan were confirmed in bottom place on Matchday 4 and, having lost their first five matches, are bidding to avoid
joining the ten teams who have previously suffered six defeats in a UEFA Champions League group stage.
Previous meetings
• The teams met on Matchday 2 in Belgrade, the visitors running out 3-1 winners. Andrey Arshavin gave Arsenal an
early lead, Cléo levelling before the break with the first of the night's three penalties and the only one to be converted.
Both Arshavin and Cléo missed from the spot in the second half but goals inside the last 20 minutes from Marouane
Chamakh and Sébastien Squillaci meant the points ended up in north London.
• Previously Arsenal had only faced opponents from Serbia once, a 1978/79 UEFA Cup third round tie against FK
Crvena zvezda. After losing 1-0 away, the Gunners were eliminated following a 1-1 home draw.
• Partizan have lost five of their last six contests against English opponents. They did beat Manchester United FC 2-1
on aggregate in the 1965/66 European Champion Clubs' Cup semi-finals to qualify for their only continental final,
where they lost 2-1 to Real Madrid FC in Brussels.
• The Serbian champions have played in London on one previous occasion, facing Queens Park Rangers FC in a
remarkable 1984/85 UEFA Cup second round tie. Partizan lost 6-2 away but won the return 4-0 to progress on away
goals.
• They also faced Leeds United AFC in the 1999/2000 UEFA Cup first round, losing 3-1 at home and 1-0 away.
Partizan coach Aleksandar Stanojević played in both games.
Match background
• Arsenal opened their Group H campaign with a 6-0 dismantling of Braga, following up their win in Belgrade on
Matchday 2 with a 5-1 triumph against Shakhtar. Since then, however, they have lost 2-1 in Donetsk and then 2-0 at
Braga to slip to second place.
• Partizan began with a 1-0 defeat at Shakhtar and after the home reverse against Arsenal they faced two games
against Braga, who had also suffered two defeats. However it only resulted in more disappointment for Stanojević's
team who lost 2-0 away and 1-0 at home, ending their home campaign with a 3-0 loss against Shakhtar on Matchday
5.
• Last season Arsenal won all five home games, play-off round included, before FC Barcelona held them to a 2-2
draw in the quarter-final first leg to set up a 6-3 aggregate success.
• Only Manchester United FC, 3-1 winners in the 2008/09 semi-final second leg, have triumphed in the 26 UEFA
Champions League games, including qualifiers, at Arsenal Stadium. Before that loss Arsène Wenger's men had
boasted a five-year unbeaten home run in the competition, which began at their previous ground, Highbury.
• In their only previous group stage participation in 2003/04, Partizan lost all three away games and scored just a
single goal on the road. After a total of 11 games in the competition proper they are still waiting for their first victory.
Team ties
• Vladimir Stojković and Mladen Krstajić played for Serbia in a FIFA World Cup qualifier against a France side including
Bacary Sagna and Gaël Clichy in Paris on 10 September 2008. For the return in Belgrade on 9 September 2009,
Stojković and Sagna were both involved with Clichy an unused substitute.
• Stojković and Krstajić played in a UEFA EURO 2008 qualifier in Belgrade against a Belgium team containing Thomas
Vermaelen in October 2006. Serbia won 1-0. All three figured in the return in Brussels in August 2007 which Belgium
won 1-0, Milan Smiljanić coming on for his senior debut.
• Bacary Sagna was in the AJ Auxerre team which won 4-1 at Partizan in the UEFA Cup group stage on 29 November
2006.

Head coach
Arsenal FC: Arsène Wenger
Date of birth: 22 October 1949
Nationality: French
Playing career: AS Mutzig, FC Mulhouse, AS Vauban, RC Strasbourg
Coaching career: RC Strasbourg (assistant coach), AS Cannes (assistant coach), AS Nancy-Lorraine, AS Monaco
FC, Nagoya Grampus Eight, Arsenal FC
• Not the most successful of players, Arsène Wenger has more than made up for that as a coach, turning Arsenal
into one of Europe's top teams.
• Born in Strasbourg, Wenger worked at Strasbourg and Cannes before Nancy-Lorraine offered him his big break.
He impressed sufficiently to be offered the job as coach of Monaco in 1987.
• Within a year Monaco scooped the French championship and Wenger the Coach of the Year award. After reportedly
turning down France and FC Bayern München, he moved on to Japan and enjoyed tremendous success with Nagoya
Grampus Eight.
• Appointed by Arsenal in September 1996, Wenger became the first non-Briton to win the Premier League in 1998,
adding the first of four FA Cup triumphs. The Gunners lost the 2000 UEFA Cup final to Galatasaray SK but claimed
another double in 2002, and in 2004 played some thrilling attacking football en route to becoming the first team since
1889 to negotiate a top-flight season unbeaten.
• Wenger nearly topped all his achievements by taking Arsenal to the 2006 UEFA Champions League final, only for
FC Barcelona to come from behind to win 2-1. Arsenal's move to their new stadium later that year was also instigated
by Wenger.
FK Partizan: Aleksandar Stanojević
Date of birth: 28 October 1973
Nationality: Serbian
Playing career: FK Partizan (twice), FK Obilic, RCD Mallorca, OFK Beograd, Videoton FC
Coaching career: OFK Beograd (youth), FK Srem, FK Partizan (assistant), Serbia (assistant), Serbia Under-19,
Partizan
• A defensive midfielder who spent much of his playing career with Partizan, Stanojević initially departed for Obilic in
1993, moving on to Spanish side Mallorca in 1995/96. Returned to Partizan in 1998, winning a league and domestic
cup in three seasons before hanging up his boots after spells with OFK and Hungarian side Videoton.
• Started his coaching career in autumn 2003 in OFK's youth categories, also working as an assistant coach to the
first team. Took charge of second division side Srem in 2006.
• Back at Partizan in December 2006 as assistant to Miroslav Djukić, following him to the Serbian national side a little
over a year later to take up the same role.
• Following Djukić's dismissal in August 2008, Stanojević was put in charge of Serbia's U19s, leading them to the
semi-finals of that season's UEFA European Championship in Ukraine and also working with the U21 team alongside
head coach Ratomir Dujković.
• Succeeded Goran Stevanović at Partizan in April 2010, becoming at 36 the youngest head coach in their history.
Swiftly secured the league title and, at the start of the following season, became the first Serbian to guide a Serbian
club into the UEFA Champions League group stage.

• UEFA Champions League: Group stage milestones
Holders FC Internazionale Milano have avoided becoming the first defending champions to fail to get through a group
stage since the UEFA Champions League began. (This record, like the others, includes the seasons between 1999/2000
and 2002/03 that featured a second group stage).
In 1992/93, FC Barcelona were the reigning European Champion Clubs' Cup holders and were beaten 4-3 on aggregate
in the second round by PFC CSKA Moskva.
S.S. Lazio goalkeeper Marco Ballotta became the oldest player to compete in the UEFA Champions League in 2007/08
when he featured against Olympiacos FC on Matchday 1 at the age of 43 years and 168 days. The record was
previously held by Alessandro Costacurta, the AC Milan defender who played against AEK Athens FC in 2006/07 at
the age of 40 years and 211 days. Ballotta was aged 43 years 252 days when he featured against Real Madrid CF
on Matchday 6.
Javier Zanetti is the oldest player to score in the competition, aged 37 years and 72 days, having found the net for
FC Internazionale Milano in their 4-3 defeat of Tottenham Hotspur FC on 20 October 2010.
Celestine Babayaro is the youngest player to have appeared in the UEFA Champions League. He was 16 years and
87 days when he started for RSC Anderlecht against FC Steaua Bucureşti on 23 November 1994. He was then sent
off in the 37th minute.
Peter Ofori-Quaye is the youngest player to have scored in the UEFA Champions League, aged 17 years and 195
days. He found the net in Olympiacos FC's 5-1 defeat at Rosenborg BK on 1 October 1997.
Barcelona and Manchester United FC have both finished as group winners on 11 occasions, one more than Milan
and Real Madrid.
Four teams have recorded six successive victories in a UEFA Champions League group stage: Milan (1992/93), Paris
Saint-Germain FC (1994/95), FC Spartak Moskva (1995/96) and Barcelona (2002/03, first group stage).
Ten teams have gone through a UEFA Champions League group stage without picking up a single point, including
Maccabi Haifa FC and Debreceni VSC in 2009/10. The other eight are: FC Dynamo Kyiv (2007/08), PFC Levski Sofia
(2006/07), SK Rapid Wien (2005/06), RSC Anderlecht (2004/05), FC Spartak Moskva and Bayer 04 Leverkusen
(2002/03, first and second group stage respectively), Fenerbahçe SK (2001/02, first group stage) and 1. FC Košice
(1997/98).
Manchester United scored 20 goals in the 1998/99 group stage, more than any other side has managed. Barcelona
scored 19 times in the 1999/2000 first group stage.
Debrecen conceded 19 goals in their six outings in 2009/10, equalling the record let in during a group stage set by
Dynamo Kyiv (2007/08) and Ferencvárosi TC in 1995/96.
No team has ever gone through a UEFA Champions League group stage without conceding a goal. Milan (1992/93),
AFC Ajax (1995/96), Juventus (1996/97 and 2004/05), Chelsea FC (2005/06), Liverpool FC (2005/06) and Villarreal
CF (2005/06) all let in just one.
Before their 3-1 win against Sporting Clube de Portugal on Matchday 6 of the 2006/07 campaign, FC Spartak Moskva
went 22 games without a victory in the competition, surpassing the unwanted record set by AEK Athens FC on
Matchday 3 of the same campaign.
The lowest total for a team qualifying from the group stage is seven points. The first to do it, since three points for a
win was introduced in 1995/96, were Legia Warszawa that same season before FC Dynamo Kyiv and Leverkusen
managed it in 1999/2000 and Liverpool in 2001/02. FC Lokomotiv Moskva and eventual finalists Juventus both
progressed with seven points in 2002/03, a feat achieved by Rangers FC and SV Werder Bremen in 2005/06.
