Interior Architecture Studio I: Residential Design
Part 1: Select a location and building, and client
This quarter you will be creating a fully developed schematic design of a residential interior.
The first phase of the project requires that you select a location and client. The following list
contains four different locations, and a list of potential clients. Please read through all the
options and then decide what location you wish to work with, and what client.
Once you select the client, your first step is to research the location, and the client description.
Each description contains significant information about the cultures, ages, professions, tastes,
and sensibilities of the clients.
You are to keep a resource binder where you will compile all information related to the client
you have selected. At the end of the first week, you will take the brief client narrative provided
for you and develop it into a fuller, more specific, narrative. This will include the information
you have found, and will allow you to more fully round out the clients as individuals with likes,
dislikes, habits, hobbys, and characteristics.
After completing your full client narrative, we will move forward to develop a full schematic
proposal for the client. This work will include the phases of:
programming, bubble diagrams, ‘parti’ (or concept ideation related to the client and the
building envelope), several initial floor-plan variations, final floor plan, elevations,
sections, perspective drawings, furniture and finishes schedule, and a final presentation
where the developmental process and final product are presented in full.
Location & Client Choices:
Location Option 1: 210 South Street, Boston, Massachusetts
http://www.loftsboston.com/boston/lofts/residential/sales/South_210_8_2
Location Option 2: Tribeca Loft by Fearon Hay Architects, Manhattan, New York

attracting-space/tribeca-loft-floor-plan-architecture-design/
Location Option 3: Shipley Artist Lofts, Entire Second Floor, Wilmington, Delaware
http://newwilmingtonart.blogspot.com/2009/11/shipley-loft-construction-pictures.html
Location Option 4: The Cork Factory Lofts, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
http://www.thecorkfactory.com/
Client Option 1: Jeremy, Marissol, Samuel, and Ariel Stephens
Client Option 2: Elaine, Fisher, and Barbara Ann MacArthur
Client Option 3: George Putnam and Allan Liu
Client Option 4: Jofus, Mikka, and Tommi Malavaii
Each of these client profiles and programs must be expanded, by you. You are to
develop a list of the functional spaces each client group is to have in their residence. For
example, your client may need: living/social space, dining space, two sleeping spaces, a
well outfitted kitchen space, two bathing spaces, et cetera. Your client may also need
specific accessory items such as specific art work for display, specific taste in furniture
selections, and specific desires in material selections. You are to write the program
requirements for your client. We will then discuss the program and when needed,
develop changes and refinements.
1. Jeremy, Marissol, Samuel, and Ariel Stephens & Pacer
and Silence.
Jeremy: 45 years old, an executive with Fairchild Publishing Company. He collects U.S.
coins, and Native American rugs. He wants to acquire two or three pieces of Spanish
colonial furniture. He loves music and plays pool.
Marissol: 42 years old, her family is from Majorca, Spain. She is a weaver and works
part time as a special project consultant with Knoll Textiles. She is a runner, loves to
cook, and plays the harp.
Samuel: 12 years old, in 6th grade. He plays tennis and likes making videos of nature
scenes, like lighting storms, and rainy skies with music put to them. He is also a big fan
of action films and he likes the martial arts; he studies Brazilian jujitsu at a local
academy.
Ariel: 14 years old, in 9th grade. She swims competitively, has won many trophies and
hopes to go to college on a swimming scholarship. She likes to make her own clothes
(with her mother's help) and has a strong alternative fashion sense. She wants her room
to convey a sense of design that is her own and not part of a pop trend.
The following program is the best listing of needs and desires that the family can give
at this time. The family reserves the right to alter the program as they discover new or
changed interests in their new residence.
The family generally likes well designed things, regardless of their function or material
nature. A sense of care, economy, environmental awareness, and craft is important to
the family in terms of how their house represents them.
They do not like splashy, gaudy, or fru-fru kinds of things. They do not like traditional
curtains or drapes at all but they do love beautiful textiles and fabrics.
They like music, and they all play some musical instruments, but they prefer small scale,
acoustic, hand made music, to over produced synthetic pop music.
They like indigenous crafts, indigenous art, indigenous music, from around the world.
Things that express the human touch, human nature, and a calmness with regard to the
passing of time all appeal to these people.
They do not like stereotypical spaces; no 'better homes and gardens' looking bedrooms
for them.
They have one dog, a Brittany Spaniel named Pacer, and a Siamese cat named Silence.
They like natural materials, and they like materials that show their true character. The
parents both work, and they make reasonable salaries, but they are by no means
wealthy.
The total cost for the renovation/upfit of their new residence must be kept to $240,000.

2. Elaine, Fisher, and Barbara Ann MacArthur & Chester and
Eddy.
Desired overall residence size of 2,400 square feet.
This program is a reasonable listing of the MacArthur family's needs and interests.
They were surprised by how difficult it was to list 'everything 'that they might need or
want in their house.
The program will need to be revised as the design of their residence develops.
Elaine has raised her daughter, Fisher, 5 years old, by herself. She was never married
but wanted a child anyway.
Her mother, Barbara Ann, moved in with Elaine after her husband passed away, six
years ago.
They have two colorful and talkative macaw birds, Chester and Eddy.
Elaine is the head of the household, and as a physician, makes a very good salary.
She loves playing mandolin in a bluegrass band, and on weekends the whole household
will often travel around the state to take part in the band's performances.
Elaine in particular feels very strongly about her house being a well designed but
integral part of the earth.
She doesn't like to live in a closed off, air conditioned box of a house.
She likes to have the windows open whenever possible, and is very interested in
alternative energy sources, and environmentally responsive materials and products.
She is a very down to earth person but she has also traveled extensively and is well
aware of the range of things good and bad that go on in this world.

3. George Putnam and Allan Liu & Perry,Thorns, and Kenzo.
George Putnam (42) is an attorney from NYC. He is of a Jewish background, and
helps support his elderly mother and father, who live in Brooklyn. While his
family is Orthodox, he is Liberal Reform. George specializes in copyright law, and
works at the firm Kaye Scholer LLP, located in Midtown Manhattan.
He loves exercise, cycling, and travel. He spends his few free hours in the evening
dining
out and taking advantage of the cultural outlets in the city. He likes traveling, and
is an avid fan of classical music. He has a very large collection of classical CDs
as well as albums, which he still prefers over the CD. He wants to have a well designed
music room with custom-built cabinetry and high-end stereo equipment.
He’s not interested in a home theatre. George collects Chinese prints from the 7th –
14th Century (Tang- Yuan Dynasties) and prefers mid-century Modern furniture.
His interest in Chinese art is what prompted him to travel extensively in Asia.
George met his partner Allan Liu (36), in Singapore. Allan is a private
investment banker for Chase Manhattan Bank, and is being transferred to one of
the New York offices. His transfer prompted their new home purchase, and their
moving in together. Allan is very excited to come to the US, as he has always
been interested in American culture. He loves MTV and rap music (which drives
George crazy).
Allan has started collecting art for his own portfolio, and is currently
looking at the British artists in the Saatchi Collection. The more controversial the
art, the better in Allan’s mind. Allan is athletic, and runs every morning. In his
free time, wants a place where he can kick his feet up and forget about work. He
really wants a home theatre (also driving George crazy). The couple love to
entertain, and they both love to cook. They have two Persian cats, Perry and Thorns,
and a Cairn Terrier named Kenzo.
Desired overall residence size of 2,400 square feet.
This program is a reasonable listing of George and Allan's needs and interests. They

4. Jofus, Mikka, and Tommi Malavaii & Serious and Gandolph
The Malavaii family came to this country from East Africa when the twin brothers,
Mikka and Tommi, were small children. The mother was a victim of the brutality and
civil wars that ravaged the African countries of the eastern side of the continent. The
father, Jofus, was a successful merchant with a business of his own in the city of Asmara,
in the country of Eritrea. He and the boys came to the United States to find a better
life.
John has become very successful as a buyer and seller of African craft items. He does
most of his business on E-Bay, so he works out of his house. In their new house the
family is looking to make a place that can become a family community. The boys are
each 24 years old, unmarried, and living at home, but the future may bring changes to
that.
The residence has to be able to accommodate either expansion, or perhaps connections
to an adjoining, or nearby residence. The father wants his family to stay close together.
They have two 3 year old dogs, Serious, a Brittany Spaniel, and Gandolph, a Boykin
Spaniel.
The total cost for the renovation/upfit of their new house must be kept to $160,000.
