Metcalf’s Law

We live by Metcalf's Law that states: "The power of the network grows exponentially with the number of

connected users". In doing so, we hope to spread the "network" into all realms of the universe (and we

need your help) in the hopes that those with the contacts that can help us all will surface and contact us.

The "network" by definition is a multi-way street where we can all leverage the contacts and community

that we build -- building the community in numbers. This is a win-win for everyone.

As of July 13, 2003, there were 804 correspondents to the online survey, representing 45 US states

and many foreign countries.

Our audience consists of LGBT and straight athletes from around the world, the majority with an

advanced degree, above average income, are information seekers and influencers, and a pre-

deposition to spend on products from companies they feel understand them.

Overview

This is an unprecedented opportunity to market your product or service to the affluent gay and

lesbian athletics community with a reach of potentially tens of thousands of athletes around the

nation, and thus we hope you will be interested in becoming a financial sponsor. Our audience

tends to be university educated, have above average disposable income, be more conservative

which means more apt plan for the future, more apt to buy financial services, travel more for

leisure and sport, and have a healthier mindset over all - all very attractive demographic

characteristics for any product category. Additionally, you would also be contributing to a forum

for intellectual discussion, debate, investigation and expression of the issues concerning gay and

lesbian athletes.

Overview of 2003

Conference 2003 Highlights (March 28-30, 2003) “Heroes Among Us …”

Our inaugural event, the National Gay & Lesbian Athletics Conference 2003 was universally

hailed as a stunning success that has touched more lives and created a deeper impact than

anyone could have possibly imagined. Our partners and representatives included the NCAA,

Women’s Sports Foundation, US Olympic Committee, MIT, Sports in Society, Harvard

University Spaulding Hospital, GLSEN, GLAAD, and others. The three-day conference brought

together over 50 speakers, the “Who’s Who” of gay athletics and straight allies, to discuss and

debate the issues confronting LGBT athletes and have started the working conversations to make

progress towards accomplishing fair and equal playing environments for everyone.

The event was covered by a number of media groups, including ESPN, Sports Illustrated, HBO

Real Sports, Boston Globe, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, and other notable LGBT and

mainstream press. During the weekend of pending War with Iraq, the event still attracted 300

attendees from the recreational, Olympic, professional, high school, and collegiate communities,

with more than 20 colleges represented. We have received feedback from the attendees

complimenting the professionalism and attention to detail, the content, the food, the committees,

and the diversity.

The conference brought together people from all over the world with many different experiences,

and from many different perspectives, with a goal of decreasing and eliminating homophobia in

sports through galvanizing supporters of topics ranging from women in sports, gays & lesbians

in high school and collegiate athletics, sensitivity training for athletes and coaches, creating and

strengthening healthy alternative community institutions for GLBT athletes and the greater

community, and identifying and developing leadership training needs in collaboration with and

in support of the sports community at-large. The conference achieved the magical balance of

networking, collaboration, intellectual discussion, debate, warmth, electricity, and its success sets

a higher standard for our collective work.

Statements from Speakers and Attendees of NGLAC 2003

“When you stand up here and look, at all of you, all of us here together …. Most of us have a

shared experience in our lives … that each of us share a time in our lives where we felt a

certain way and we felt different from everyone else and we felt alone and isolated and that

were the only people in the world like this, and it’s incredible to see these rooms filled with

people like me, and like each other – we have a huge family here.”

-- Mark Tewksbury, Gold Medal Olympian Swimmer

“This is just the beginning … I can see this conference grow to thousands of people attending

…”

– Robert Dover, Bronze Medal Olympian Equestrian

“I had to scrap up change from a jar to make it to take two buses from Philadelphia to Boston

… I’m so excited to be here.”

-- Paul Farber, journalist and runner at the University of Pennsylvania

“This is the first time I’ve ever talked about my sexuality in a public setting and this is a very

moving moment for me … have the strength now and I want to be a part of this [movement].”

-- Holly Metcalf, Gold Medal Olympian Rower

“… for us as a group here [today] to build that bridge … for those that are able to live openly

and honestly, you’re the hero and you can impact people that you don’t even know and that’s

how we’re getting closer to being everywhere and being accepted …”

-- Billy Bean, Former Major League Baseball Player

“… sports challenges the distribution of power in society -- hyper-masculinity has caused

more pain, more oppression, more discomfort in this society, than anything. We live in the

most violent society -- guns are a masculine thing -- sports are a masculine thing --

masculinity causes violence -- violence against men and violence against women!” “This

[conference] is the first time men and women have gotten together to talk about these issues.”

-- Eric Anderson, sociologist and author of “Trailblazing”

“I’m here on behalf of the US Olympic Committee and it’s a great step for the organization to

play a more active role with the [gay] community … At the US Olympic Committee, they are

very aware that they have LGBT staff and athletes and we’re about producing the best athletes

and how to get the best performance out of the athletes.”

-- Alicia McConnell, Associate Director, Community Outreach Programs, United

States Olympic Committee

“I have not had such a positive experience in so long a time. The GLAF conference was

indeed overdue, I am very glad I was a part of this inaugural event. Indeed, this is just the

beginning of something remarkable.”

-- Chuck Hagel, hockey player and organizer from Minnesota

About Us

About the Gay & Lesbian Athletics Foundation, Inc.

The Gay & Lesbian Athletics Foundation is organizing our second annual International Gay &

Lesbian Athletics Conference to be held on March 26-28, 2004 in Boston/Cambridge,

Massachusetts. The conference will be the second of the Foundation’s annual events and will

focus on the acceptance and visibility of LGBT athletes in the professional, amateur, and

recreational athletics communities.

The Gay & Lesbian Athletics Foundation is a 100% volunteer staffed nonprofit organization

based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It is the first nonprofit organization to focus on the

acceptance and visibility of LGBT athletes in the professional, amateur, and recreational athletics

communities. The Foundation is a politically neutral organization free from party affiliation or

bias.

Mission Statement

The Gay & Lesbian Athletics Foundation is dedicated to the acceptance and visibility of

gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender men and women in the professional, amateur, and

recreational athletics communities. The Foundation promotes recognition, understanding

and respect among ALL members of the athletics community regardless of sexual

orientation, through support and education for a fair and inclusive environment.

Adjunctly, GLAF is about creating positive role models for society-at-large.

 The purpose: promote acceptance and visibility of gay, lesbian, bisexual and

transgender men and women in the professional, amateur, and recreational athletics

communities

 The business: support and education

 The values: recognition, understanding and respect among ALL members of the

athletics community regardless of sexual orientation

About the International Gay & Lesbian Athletics Conference

The International Gay & Lesbian Athletics Conference (IGLAC) is the name of the flagship

annual conference organized by the Gay & Lesbian Athletics Foundation. IGLAC will be our

second annual conference that focuses on the acceptance and visibility of LGBT athletes in the

professional, amateur, and recreational athletics communities. The annual conference will

provide a forum for LGBT professional, amateur, and recreational athletes from around the

world to share their stories and experiences; learn from one another; build networks; and to

promote cooperation – in essence, creating “community”. Conference goals include championing

the acceptance and visibility of LGBT athletes; to foster the development of inclusive and

supportive athletics environments; to dispel myths concerning LGBT athletes; and to provide

LGBT athletes with a forum to build networks and to foster mentoring relationships.

Preliminary Conference Format & Content

Our second annual International Gay & Lesbian Athletics Conference will be held in the March

26-28, 2004 in Boston/Cambridge, Massachusetts.

The conference will include at least five Keynote (we had twelve in 2004) speakers who are

recognized for their knowledge and/or involvement in the athletics communities. In addition,

speakers will be selected based on their ability to contribute to the role of the conference as a

forum for intellectual discussion, debate, investigation and/or expression of issues concerning

LGBT athletes. Panel discussions and workshops will be sponsored by an organization that has

wide-reach within the LGBT and/or athletics community (these organizations are named

Content Sponsors, a non-financial commitment). A wide variety of Content Sponsors allows

GLAF to both affect the most people possible, as well as get the most people involved in shaping

the direction of the conference.

Preliminary weekend format:

 Friday: afternoon pickup sporting events, evening registration, reception cocktails

and dinner; keynote opening remarks. Sports Leadership Congress.

 Saturday: keynote speakers, panel discussions, lunch, all day exposition, dinner,

evening sports technology/fashion show, and an alternative to the club scene

 Sunday: speakers’ breakfast, post-conference meetings, afternoon exposition and

networking, pickup sporting events

Content Sponsors and their confirmed topics under development (more under

development):

An organization (not an individual), typically a non-profit, that is nationally/internationally

known with wide-reach and has agreed to actively participate in the conference as the

organizer of a panel covering a specific issue or discussion. The conference requires each

panel to have a Content Sponsor, thereby affecting the most people possible with their

message, as well as allowing for the most people to shape the direction of the conference.

The NCAA

The International Collegiate Athletic Association is among the growing list of conference

supporters. In a letter committing his support to the International Gay & Lesbian Athletics

Conference, Cedric W. Dempsey, NCAA President, says, "Education and student-athlete welfare

are two critical components of the NCAA's mission." Accordingly, the NCAA has addressed

homophobia in intercollegiate athletics at its prominent national meetings and recently added

sexual orientation education to NCAA diversity workshops. Under the leadership of the NCAA

Minority Opportunities & Interest Committee and the Committee on Women's Athletics,

Dempsey says, “The association will continue to address the important issues surrounding

diversity in intercollegiate athletics."

The US Olympic Committee

The US Olympic Committee sent an official representative to the 2004 NGLAC to represent their

views on gay and lesbian athletes. We are currently working with the USOC for greater

participation in IGLAC 2004.

Boston as Venue

Sporting News voted Boston as the “Best Sports City” and is attributed to the city’s sports teams,

traditions, fans, and overall commitment to the sports industry. See

Metcalf’s Law

We live by Metcalf's Law that states: "The power of the network is squared with each additional

node". In doing so, we hope to spread the "network" into all realms of the universe (and we need

your help) in the hopes that those with the contacts that can help us all will surface and contact

us. The "network" by definition is a multi-way street where we can all leverage the contacts and

community that we build -- building the community in numbers. This is a win-win for everyone.

Marketing and Sponsorship

Who will I be reaching with my sponsorship?

This is an unprecedented opportunity to market your product or service to the affluent gay and

lesbian athletics community with a reach of potentially tens of thousands of athletes around the

nation. You would additionally gain focused access to gay and lesbian sports players and

enthusiasts throughout the three-day conference. The conference is expected to draw over 500

sports athletes, educators, leaders, and enthusiasts from across the nation. Our website will

continually draw the affluent audience before, during, and after the conference, since we will

document the content of the conference as appropriate. We are working on a national marketing

campaign that includes advertisements in major publications that would increase the exposure of

the conference to hundreds of thousands of individuals. The IGLAC will promote our goals of

recognizing role models, building community and breaking down stereotypes about the gay and

lesbian sports community.

The diverse constituents of the Board of Directors, Advisory Board, and Community Steering

Committees are a good representation of the conference attendees – most of who hold advanced

degrees and are professionals. In whole, the conference is targeting the high school, collegiate,

recreational, amateur, and professional LGBT athletics audience. This audience is more disposed

to companies that speak to them in the first person. They are brand aware, highly educated,

information seekers, and great influencers.

Additionally, the conference has a policy that each panel/workshop must have a Content

Sponsor. A Content Sponsor is an organization (not an individual and typically a non-profit) that

is nationally/internationally known with wide-reach and has agreed to actively participate in the

conference as the organizer of a panel covering a specific issue or discussion. This is one method

that guarantees the focus of the conference is wide overall, but focused on a specific segment for

each panel, thereby affecting the most people possible with our messages, as well as allowing for

the most people to shape the direction of the conference. For our Financial Sponsors, this

structure guarantees attendance by a widely attractive target audience.

General Gay and Lesbian Demographics:

 Tangible assets of the U.S. gay and lesbian community exceed $800 billion

 Average annual household income: $62,130

 42% own a residence

 50% buy or lease a car each year

 95.9% traveled on business or pleasure during 1999

 15% of the gay and lesbian community earn in excess of $100,000 per year

Survey Results with Demographics of Our Audience:

From demographics collected from our website survey, our audience consists of

gay/lesbian/straight athletes from around the country and even around the world, the majorities

with an advanced degree, above average income, and a pre-deposition to spend on products

from companies they feel understand them. See our survey at

As of July 13, 2004, results from our survey of 804 respondents representing 45 US states and

many foreign countries.

Our audience consists of LGBT and straight athletes from around the world, the majority with an

advanced degree, above average income, are information seekers and influencers, and a pre-

deposition to spend on products from companies they feel understand them.

Our website, www.gayconference.org garners a large amount of national and international

attention (over 60 countries), with March 2003 traffic of 7000 unique visitors.

How can I support the conference while getting my message delivered?

The International Gay and Lesbian Athletics Conference is registered as a non-profit corporation

in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and received our IRS 501(c)3 determination letter in July

of 2002. To ensure sufficient funding in support of our mission, and to attract a significant

number of registrants at the affordable fee of only $150 per person ($75 per student), we are

seeking conference sponsorship at various levels of support.

We offer a variety of sponsorship opportunities to suit the specific needs of your organization.

We also invite our sponsors to propose additional opportunities, or to make suggestions to us to

customize any events listed below to meet your organization’s needs.

Menino was sponsored by The Garden of Eden. The session was keynoted by 5 speakers: Mac

Additional dinners, lunches, and breakfasts are being planned, and opportunities exist to sponsor

those events as well.

Panels and Workshops

Panels and Workshops

One sponsor per workshop: $2,000/each

The sponsorship of individual workshops offers high visibility

geared towards select audiences. Individual workshop

sponsorship is available with the number of workshops being

subject to change and topics are currently being defined.

When sponsoring a panel or workshop, it is a marketing

designation only and does not signify the panel has direct use

of those funds. This is due to the fact that not all panels and

workshops may have a Financial Sponsor, thus requiring all

funds to be shared with the overall conference and allocated fairly. Regardless, your targeted

message will be received by your audience.

 Signage/Banners

Signage display will be limited to the 1.25 hour panel slot during the panel and outside

the panel’s door. Your organization's name and logo will be prominently featured

 Print Program Brochure - You will be given appropriate mention in the printed program

brochure, which will be nationally distributed via a download from the website. One

quarter-page advertisement inside ($300 value). (We are working on a national

marketing campaign that includes advertisements in major publications that would

ESPN-Style Sports Show Covering LGBT Athletics

ESPN-Style Sports Show Covering LGBT Athletics

Financial sponsor: $10,000 per 5 show package

GLAF is currently co-hosting a Health/Fitness/Medical show with Harvard Medical School’s

Spaulding Hospital Network, during July and August of 2003. As an offshoot of this current

show, GLAF is in the process of developing a weekly one-hour weekly gay athletics show, which

would be part talk-show and part exhibition (ESPN-like) and instruction.

The talk show portion would consist of interviews with individuals (and groups) who are self-

identified gay and lesbian athletes/coaches, straight allies, and subject experts including authors

and academics. Interview topics would cover high school, collegiate, professional/Olympic,

recreational, and adult-amateur sports. The content will explore the interviewee’s personal and

athletics backgrounds, stories, challenges, and viewpoints on the current and future state of their

sport.

The exhibition portion would be ESPN-like and serve to broadcast gay and lesbian athletic games

and tournaments. Related to exhibition, the instruction portion would serve to educate not only

the gay and lesbian public, but would certainly appeal to the broader public as well by

illuminating areas of general interests such as the rules and regulations of mainstream sports and

differences between same sports rules across high school, collegiate, professional, Olympic, and

recreational.

For the pilot, the target first show launch date is the Fall of 2003 on Boston’s public-access BNN

Channel 23. Boston Neighborhood Network (BNN) Television, Channel 9, from 8:30 to 9:00 p.m.

More than 115,000 households in Boston subscribe to cable television, representing close to

potential 400,000 viewers. The shows are also re-run several times during the week and weekend

following the live show (phone calls are only taken during the live airing). Other such public

access shows around the country will be asked to also air select shows.

Benefits include:

 Signage/Banners

Being public access, a mini-sign will be displayed on the show with logo

 Print Program Brochure - You will be given appropriate mention in the printed program

brochure, which will be nationally distributed via a download from the website. One

Scholarship Fund for High School and Collegiate Athletes and Olympic Hopefuls

Scholarship Fund for High School and Collegiate Athletes and

Olympic Hopefuls

Price $15,000 per donor

GLAF is in the process of creating a scholarship fund granting scholarships to high school and

collegiate student athletes of distinction and promise, and Olympic hopefuls.

The common question is when will a professional athlete come out of the closet while still

competing in a team sport? The answer is commonly NEVER, or there are a FEW but hidden, or

it’s QUIETLY KNOWN. So, is it possible? Yes, and one way is to cultivate outstanding high

school and collegiate athletes, and Olympic hopefuls that are already out and make their way to

be top feeder recruits for the professional teams and the Olympics.

Benefits include:

 Print Program Brochure - You will be given appropriate mention in the printed program

brochure, which will be nationally distributed via a download from the website. One full-

Fund for Events

Fund for Events

Open Availabilty: $10,000 each donor

The Fund for Events is a collection of funds used to sponsor other similar conferences and

sporting events that are in line with the GLAF mission. These other events are opportunities for

our sponsors to gain additional brand recognition and association. There are thousands of these

types of events around the world each year and individually sponsoring select ones for

individual sponsors is a time-consuming and non-productive way of spending your corporate

time. GLAF helps you extend your brand by focusing on just those events that are in line with

our mission, thereby leveraging your time most effectively. Each sponsor will be invited to

participate on the Corporate Advisory Board.

 Signage/Banners

A Fund sponsor is entitled to provide appropriate signage in the conference registration

area, in the conference binder, on the GLAF website, on a display board in the conference

registration area and in any other pre-conference promotional material.

 Print Program Brochure - You will be given appropriate mention in the printed program

brochure, which will be nationally distributed via a download from the website. One
