DIVISION III – PHOTOGRAPHY
Judging will take place Saturday morning at 10:00 am, June 4,
2011. Photographs must remain in place until completion of the
awards presentation that begins at 4:30 pm on Sunday, June 5.
Photographs not picked up at that time become the property of the
Albuquerque Rose Society. For any questions about the

RULES and GUIDELINES FOR PHOTOGRAPHY ENTRIES
By entering this show, exhibitors agree to abide by these rules.
1. Exhibitors need not be members of any rose society.
2. Photography exhibitors must pre-register all entries by Friday,
May 27, 2011, with Jody Ifversen, jifversen@msn.com or
(505) 281-9781 (leave message with call back number). Please
indicate the Section, Class, and ARS Exhibition Name of each
entry.
3. Exhibitors may enter no more than two (2) photographs in any
one class and no more than a total of ten (10) entries. A
photograph may not be entered more than once.
4. All entries in this show must have been photographed by the
exhibitor. ―PG‖ (Photographer Grown) or ―PA‖ (Photographer
Arranged) is to be written on the top right corner of the entry
tag to be eligible for Gold, Silver, or Bronze Medal
Certificates.
5. Previous winning photographs (Best of Class, Best of Section,
or Best of Show) in an ARS competition (American Rose
magazine or national, district or local show) may not be
entered again in this show.
6. Entries will be accepted between 7:30 am and 9:30 am on
Saturday, June 4, 2011. Requests for special delivery of entries
must be coordinated in advance with Jody Ifversen.

7. All entries must have a mini-horticulture entry tag filled out
completely (both top and bottom) by the exhibitor, closed and
attached to the upper left corner of the matted photograph. The
exhibitor may place nothing identifying the photographer on
the front of the photograph.
8. The Photography Classification and Placement Committee will
place all photographs in the show.
9. Rose photographs are to be entered under ARS approved
exhibition names.
10. Photographs taken with film or digital equipment are equally
welcome and may be in color or in black and white. Digital
enhancements as well as darkroom enhancements are also
welcome.
11. All photographs are to be matted and mounted. Outside
dimensions of the mat are to be 11" x 14". Orientation may be
landscape or portrait. Color of the mat is at the discretion of
the exhibitor.
12. Photographs may be no smaller than 5" x 7" and no larger than
8" x 10". Non-standard shapes are welcome (e.g., oval,
diamond, triangle, etc.).
13. The Show Committee will make every effort to have a
Photography Judging Team composed of an ARS Accredited
Horticulture Judge, an ARS Accredited Arrangement Judge,
and a highly experienced photographer.
14. Judges may ask the clerk to pick up a photo, if necessary, to
adequately view the photo. Under no circumstances is a photo
to be turned in such a way as to show the exhibitor’s name or
any other identifying information.
15. Judges (other than Photography Judges) may enter photographs
in any of Sections A thru E and G. Photography Judges may
enter their photographs only in Section H.
16. The Show Committee will exercise due caution in protecting
all exhibits, but neither the Albuquerque Rose Society, the
ARS Pacific Southwest District, nor the Albuquerque Garden
Center will assume any liability in loss or damage to property.

17. Entries that do not comply with rules 3, 4, 5, 7, and 11 above
will be accepted for display only, and will not be judged.
SECTION A – “THEME OF THE SHOW”
JUDGING CRITERIA
This section is for photographs that best interpret the theme of this
rose show.
Class 1 – A photograph of any rose or roses that best interprets the
theme of this rose show, A New Mexico State of Mind. Roses must
be dominant in the photograph.

SECTION B – “THE ROSE”
JUDGING CRITERIA
The goal here is to show the best qualities of the rose(s), spray, or
collection, e.g. brilliant stamens, great form, and so forth. Some
photographers will have bloom(s) and leaves in focus, while others
will deliberately have foliage out of focus. As long as the rose can
be identified, it is not necessary to see the entirety of the
bloom/petals. Cropping that enhances the rose(s), while still
permitting identification, is allowed and is not to be penalized in
any way. Good composition shows the rose(s) to best advantage.
Class 2 – One Bloom at its most perfect stage – Hybrid tea,
grandiflora, floribunda, including singles (four to eight petals), no
sidebuds.

Class 3 – One Spray, to include two or more blooms – Hybrid tea,
grandiflora, floribunda or polyantha.

Class 8 – Cinderella – A horticultural specimen that does not fit
the criteria for Classes 2 thru 7. Suitable subjects might be rose
hips; hybrid tea or miniature with sidebuds; a climber on a wall or
trellis, showing more than a spray or individual specimen; critters
and roses; a rose or rose bush with companion plants; any artistic
view of a rose or roses that does not fit in the above classes.

SECTION C – “THE ROSE ARRANGEMENT”
JUDGING CRITERIA
The goal here is to show the best qualities of any type of
arrangement and the roses within the arrangement. Good
composition shows the arrangement to best advantage. Arranger,
if known and if different from the photographer, is to be credited.
Class 9 – Arrangements – The ARS Guidelines for Judging Rose
Arrangements may be used as a reference guide. Exhibitors must
note the Type of Arrangement – Traditional, Modern, or Oriental
Manner – on the entry tag.

SECTION D – “THE ROSE GARDEN”
JUDGING CRITERIA
The goal here is to show the best qualities of roses within the
garden setting, as the photographer interprets that. This section
should show the use of roses within the structure of a garden,
which can be widely variable. Roses should dominate in the
photograph, and some layout of the garden should be visible. A
single rose bush with companion plants should be entered in the
Cinderella class.

Class 10 – Public or Private Gardens – If the garden is a public
garden, it should be identified on the entry tag. If the garden is a
private garden, the owner of the garden need not be identified
unless s/he wishes to be.

SECTION E – “ROSE ART”
JUDGING CRITERIA
The photograph should evoke a sense of originality and a new and
different way of imagining the rose(s) with the mind’s eye. This
may include processes used to alter the original image such as
colorizing, texturizing, dodging, burning, dithering, painting,
shadowing, blurring, layering, cloning, filtering, merging,
cropping, etc.
Class 11 – Realistic Rose Art – A photograph having altered
reality, design, form or components of a rose plant(s), or any
portion thereof, in which the portion or perhaps even the specific
variety remains evident.

Class 12 – Abstract Rose Art – A photograph having non-objective
or altered reality, design, form or components of a rose plant(s) or

SECTION F – “BUDDING PHOTOGRAPHERS”
JUDGING CRITERIA
This section is for entrants age 17 and under. These photographers
may enter photographs in any of the Sections A thru E, as well.
However the entrant may not enter the same photograph in more
than one section. Blue ribbon awards in Section F are eligible to
be considered for Medal Certificates; the Section F winner is also
eligible to be considered for Best in Show.
Class 13 – Budding Photographers – A photograph of any rose(s),
rose arrangement, rose garden or rose art.

This section is for any entrant who has not won a blue ribbon in
photography in any previous rose show. Novices may, of course,
enter the regular classes as well, but a photograph may be entered
only once in the show.
Class 14 – One Bloom – Photograph of a rose, one bloom, and no
side buds. Any variety of rose.

Distinction 20 points
Distinction is something that sets a photograph apart from others in
its class. Everything about the photograph is well done, but in
addition, its visual impression evokes a visceral feeling that may be
intangible—the ―wow‖ factor.
