             AC Mole (Cold) Measurement Procedure

Operation Methods are used for testing the LHC Magnets in Cryogenic Conditions in
building 2173 (SM18) and are the working documents produced for that purpose only. These
Methods are step-by-step procedures that may be followed by the Shift Operators of SM 18 for
carrying out different power- tests of the super-conducting magnets.

AIM
The Magnetic alignment measurement of main lattice dipoles includes the
field direction, curved axis shape and position of in-built correctors. This
measurement is essential to verify the geometry of the assembly and to
guarantee correct installation with respect to the reference beam orbit.

Preparation
   1. Place the Tripods on the centre line of the magnet (both on connection side and
      Lyre side)
   2. Connect the motor1 and Motor2 cables with the rack (Motor1- Connection side
      and Motor2 – Lyre side)
   3. Place the Leica in front of Inner Connection of the magnet (the centre of the
      Leica should be approx. 10cm from the Centre line marked on the floor This is
      called Station 1)
   4. Clean the three bases of the Leica stand and the floor with a clean cloth for better
      stability and guard the Leica with the ribbon towers
   5. Switch on the Leica and let it warm for 20min. (Note: Laser Can be switched
      OFF using Program)
   6. After warming up of Leica , adjust the level of the Leica with the help of
      adjusting screws on the bases
   7. Connect the LAN cable of the Leica controller with PC
   8. After getting confirmation from the control Room, Connect the QCD power
      supply cable from the rack with the connector in IFS box
   9. Pass the plastic in the Inner tube of the magnet from the Lyre side
   10. Connect the metal string (from tripod) with plastic tube and pull the metal string
      from the Lyre Side. While pulling the plastic, insert the plastic in the outer tube of
      the magnet and it will be used afterwards
   11. Connect the front side of the mole with the metal string from the connection side
      and backside of the mole with the metal string from the Lyre side and connect the
      mole cable also. Ensure that the reflector in the mole facing the Leica.

  12. Pull the mole to the connection side and keep the mole at the starting position of
     the inner tube so that it is ready for measurement.
  13. Switch on the PC and power supplies for the electronics.
  14. Check the LAN status by clicking the shortcut on the desktop (file…)
  15. If the status is ok, then start the application (DGM5.Vbp) by double click the icon
     on the desktop.
  16. In application, Select the Manufacturing company name
  17. Select the type of the magnet (A or B)
  18. Type the magnet number Last two/three digit (Example: For Magnet No:1050,
     should write 50 only)
  19. Select Final check and click creating new job( if it is new job, otherwise click
     existing job)
  20. Type the bench Number( 0 or 1)
  21. Now application starts
  22. Now throw the laser beam on the reflector(TBR 0.5) in the mole.


Measurement
  1. Start Database from the Database Menu
  2. Select Cold Bore tube (T1)
  3. Take measurement for T1
  4. Close Database and select the motor2 and direction A ( incase of              outer
     connection, select the motor2 and direction B)
  5. Click Start Button then select “use magnetic axis” and type distance as
     “17000”mm.
  6. Switch on the MASTER and SLAVE power supplies, which powers the QCD
  7. Now the measurement starts by showing the windows for level and voltage
     pickups.
  8. Take care to continue the measurement if the tolerance of the pickup exceeded
     (by pressing “yes” & pressing “Cancel”). This will continue up to approx. 7 to 9
     readings while starting and at the end of the measurement

9. Incase of laser beam cut, position the Leica properly so that the laser beam should
   be in the middle of the tube and repeat the measurement as above
10. Once the measurement is finished successfully, Switch OFF the Master & Slave
   power supplies. Take network points for station1 by clicking the database menu
   and selecting the network points (ref1, ref 2…….ref12) The reference points may
   be selected using dropdown menu or using “Next “ or “Back” buttons
11. Close the station.
12. Now move the Leica to front of the outer tube of the magnet. Ensure that centre of
   the Leica should be 10cm from the centre line of the magnet. This is called
   Stsation2
13. Clean the bases of the Leica stand for the better stability and guard the Leica with
   the ribbon towers
14. Disconnect the mole from the inner tube.
15. Connect the metal wire from the other motor with plastic and pull the metal string
   from the Lyre Side through the outer tube
16. Connect the front side of the mole with the metal string from the connection side
   and backside of the mole the with metal string (from the other motor) from the
   Lyre side and connect the mole cable
17. Pull the mole from the connection side and keep the mole at the starting position
   of the outer tube so that it is ready for the measurement.
18. Take network points for station 2 by clicking the database menu and selecting the
   network points (ref1, ref 2…….ref12) The reference points may be selected using
   dropdown menu or using “Next “ or “Back” buttons
19. Close Database and orient the station. If the solution is successful within less
   RMS error, accept, otherwise reject. Delete some points and try again. If not
   succeeded then take fresh network points
20. Throw the laser beam on Cold Bore reflector (TBR 0.5)
21. Repeat the step 1 to 10
22. Take the plane D9, D10 and D11
23. Then close the station

  24. Place the Leica stand (special stand for fiducials measurement) in such way that
     the Leica should see all the network points and fiducials
  25. Mount the Leica on the above stand and adjust the level. This is called station3
  26. Take network points for station 3 by clicking the database menu and selecting the
     network points (ref1, ref 2…….ref12). The reference points may be selected using
     dropdown menu or using “Next “ or “Back” buttons
  27. Close Database and orient the station. If the solution is successful within less
     RMS, accept, otherwise reject. Delete some points and try again. If not succeeded
     then take fresh network points
  28. Place fiducial reflector on the connection side fiducial and throw the laser beam
     on that.
  29. In LTM program, by right click, Measure define window can be obtained. In that,
     type the ID as “Fiducial/Connection”, check mark the “Read from ADM distance
     and then press “OK”
  30. Confirm by observing the typed ID present on the left hand side of the
     window(tracker manager window). Press the green button, to start the
     measurement. Observe a yellow square on the window while taking measurement
     and yellow turn into green after taken the measurement.
  31. Similarly the other fiducials (“Fiducial/middle”, “Fiducial/lyre_inner” and
     “Fiducial/lyre_outer”) can be measured.
  32. Switch OFF the Leica power and disconnect all the cables mentioned above.
  33. Proceed for analysis


Precautions:
        In Nivel level window, the difference should not be exceeded the tolerance
         limit so always keep watch the values.
        Take care while the motor is running the mole cable should be smoothly come
         out from the tube without any obstruction.
        Once the measurement is over keep the mole box in the box immediately.
