									Action Verbs and Direct Objects

Action Verb-tell what the subject of the sentence does.

Direct Object-is the receiver of the verb’s action. The direct object answers the
question Whom? Or What? More than one direct object may follow an action verb.

*The direct object comes after the verb (in the predicate).

Example with a direct object:
                  Action verb   Direct object

They often gather food.
{Ask yourself what action is being done? (gather) Then say “gather” whom or
what? (food) The answer is the direct object.}

Example without a direct object:

                 Action Verb

The steam rises toward the ceiling.

{Ask yourself what action is being done? (rises) Say whom or what “rises”? (no
answer) Therefore there is no direct object.}
