ABSTRACT:

This contribution proposes SO64 support for HRPD Auxiliary connections and support for

IP flows with no PPP Encapsulation and HDLC-like framing for the HRPD IOS

specifications.

RECOMMENDATION:

Review, discuss, and accept the proposals in this contribution for the HRPD IOS.

3GPP2/TSG-A Contribution

1 DISCUSSION

2

3 In contribution A40-20050314-031 LU SO67 revised.pdf, Lucent proposes SO64 support

4 for auxiliary HRPD connections. Motorola agrees that SO64 should be supported for the

5 HRPD multi-flow packet application feature and recommends it be supported for the

6 A.S0008-A and A.S0009-0 releases to differentiate auxiliary connections from the main

7 connection at the PDSN.

8

9 Lucent’s contribution also proposes support for SO67 which is defined as HRPD

10 Auxiliary connection with no PPP Encapsulation and no HDLC-like Framing in the

11 contribution. The contribution references TSG-C liaison A00-20050214-006 TSG-

12 C_corr_re_non-PPP_HRPD_Flows.pdf which states:

13

14 To support SO XX, the PDSN needs to have the capability to send IP packets to the AN without

15 encapsulating the packets in PPP, and without applying octet-based HDLC-like framing.

16

17 Motorola agrees that removal of the PPP header with no HDLC-like framing could

18 enhance HRPD VOIP support, however, we don’t agree that PPP header removal should

19 occur in the AN. Please note that TSG-C’s liaison places this requirement on the PDSN,

20 not the AN. We also don’t agree that the RAN should be required to support ROHC

21 compression. We propose the following changes as a basis for moving forward.

22

23

24

25 Adding and removing PPP headers is inefficient. Therefore the header should not be

26 added in the first place by the PDSN This requirement should not impact the HRPD AN.

27

28 The PDSN currently supports ROHC compression as specified in X.S0011-C. We

29 recommend that compression be made mandatory at the PDSN for HRPD VoIP support

30 to support IOS interoperability. We recommend compression optionally be supported in

Motorola Inc 3

3GPP2/TSG-A Contribution

1 the AN. Additional A11 signaling will be needed to negotiate this capability between the

2 PDSN and AN.

3

4 TSG-X has deferred PPP header free/no-HLDC framing support to an X.S0011-D point

5 release pending a decision in TSG-A on how it should be supported. Motorola

6 recommends adding HRPD IOS support for PPP header-free operation without HDLC-

7 like framing to the A.S0008-A and A.S0009 Rev A releases with compression mandatory

8 at the PDSN (SO68). There will be minimal impact to the IOS to support this.

9

10 Motorola supports optional compression in the AN (SO67) if standardization can be

11 completed by the April 3GPP2/TSG-A meeting. If standardization cannot be agreed to or

12 completed by then, support for (SO67) should be deferred to the next HRPD IOS release.

13 Baselining of A.S0008-A and A.S0009 should not be delayed beyond the April TSG-A

14 meeting.
