The exam, although acknowledged to be one of the toughest of its kind, is not actually tough to crack. The exam does not test how hard you work in the last 6 months of your appearing for the exam; the exam tests how well you are able to apply whatever you have learnt in the past 20 years of your academic career. Therefore, long hours of study along, may not be the only factor responsible for your success in CAT. Based on our experience in training for CAT, we think the following things are necessary for CAT –1.Being thorough with basics – We have often seen students being misled into thinking that CAT can be cracked with short cuts or tricks. Nothing is further from the truth nowadays. Examiners are well aware of these so-called shortcuts and tricks and set questions that avoid such short methods and ensure that only basic understanding of concept is tested. When such students learn shortcuts and apply them without understanding, they often get wrong answers to exam questions.  Therefore, you should be thorough with basics before you learn any shortcuts or quicker methods. Being thorough with basics ensures that you are able to distinguish between questions where shortcuts can be applied and questions where shortcuts cannot be applied. Such an approach ensures better results for you.2. Being consistent in your preparation – You can assume that there are two types of consistencies required to crack exams such as CAT. First, consistency of time that you devote to the preparation – whether you are a student, or a working executive, you should prepare for certain number of hours regularly. A study schedule that is erratic and that incorporates long hours during some weeks and no study during others does not help.
