Wordsworth’s warring Romantic poetics can be discussed in the light of Locke’s philosophy of human identity. Wordsworth’s poetics aims at Romantic purification and Revolutionary memory; his poetics shows the delicate fusion of the empirical and rational theories of knowledge which marks Wordsworth’s poetry and poetics. His poetry is based on the Enlightenment subject endowed with the past heritage of the Western civilization. Matthew Arnold is a conservative liberal, and he is liberal in that he is a conqueror, equipped with the Victorian rationalism, of the English Romanticism and Romantics, whose ideas in a sense wisely reflected the Industrial Revolution of their own country. He safely remains within the Christian humanist tradition of his age of changes, and, in fact, he is the pioneering leader of that tradition, planting its sound root into the humanities and English studies.
