AirPal� is most noted for their line of air-assisted lateral patient transfer devices. These devices create an inflatable patient surface while a constant volume of air escapes from beneath. The escaping air breaks the plane of friction, and allows for safe and easy lateral transfers of physically dependent or injured patients with less risk of injury to the caregiver. Using a system of inflatable chambers, the RAMP� creates an incline surface that raises a patient's chest. A separate air chamber positions the patient's head to achieve the optimal "ear to sternal notch position" for airway management. Proper patient positioning is achievable regardless of patient habitus while using the AirPal� RAMP� (there is no weight limit). While foreseen to enhance all forms of direct laryngoscopy, it is the efficiency of the device that will likely have the most impact on protocols observed in the Operating Room. The RAMP� is available with a specially engineered and integrated AirPal� Platform (air-assisted lateral patient transfer device); clinical trials showed the RAMP� "All-in-One" was capable of transferring a patient from their stretcher, onto the OR Table, then positioned on the OR Table and "ramped" to proper position in under one minute. Once the airway has been established, the patient can be immediately and automatically repositioned for surgery. Traditional methods of ramping a patient are ad hoc, unreliable and extremely time inefficient using the manual placement of linens behind a patient's back.

Unlike traditional patient lifts that require special attachments and apparatus for horizontal patient transfer; the device that AirPal� pioneered and brought to market has an underside that is perforated for air release. For many years liver surgery has been considered major surgery, which has been often associated with a high complication rate. Although evidence suggests that better results are achieved in specialized centers with a high volume of procedures, nevertheless liver resections are now carried out in most of the general surgery divisions. Beside the fact that I still believe that liver surgery should be a field of trained specialists, in editing this book I have attempted to cover for the general surgeon all the main topics of liver surgery and to review the very latest innovative developments. Eminent surgeons from different countries agreed to contribute their own views, opinions and results in the management of primary and secondary liver tumours. The book covers most of the topics which are essential elements in modern liver surgery: applied anatomy of the liver with its radiological demonstration, prognostic indicators and staging systems, portal vein embolization, vascular occlusion, intraoperative ultrasonic guided surgery, different transection techniques. I thought necessary to give space to the radiologists in an effort to outline the extraordinary advances of interventional radiology, which have taken place in recent years. Particular consideration has been given to the aspect of avoiding and managing complications. There are also new specific contributions such as partial hepatectomy after transplantation, genetics of hepatocellular carcinoma, hepatocyte transplantation, and computer-assisted operations. Since the first report of a laparoscopic liver resection, hepatic resection using minimally invasive surgery has become increasingly more common; therefore emphasis has been given to this alternative approach.
