It is common knowledge throughout the world that the Middle East is a hot bed of financial activity. Yet, where as the regions banks may hold plenty of cash, what can be said about their brand value? The Brand Finance review of the top 500 financial service brands in the world, provides great insight into the top finance brands by sector. Unfortunately for the Middle East's banks, their brand value could not get anywhere close to that of the big brands in the rest of the world.The fragility of the Middle East financial industry was brought to light as the financial crisis hit. Despite the boom of recent years in the region, the recession led to an exodus of foreign investment, as well as a big chunk of the expat workforce. The global economic crisis damaged the level of foreign investment into the UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) region. Foreign direct investment (FDI) to the area, covering 14 Arab countries, fell from US$64 billion in 2007 to around US$60 billion in 2008. This illustrates how people were prepared to invest money in the fledgling financial sector in the Middle East whilst things were going well, but then quickly lost confidence at the first signs of trouble.Whereas mature financial institutions, such as the Bank of America, HSBC and BNP in the West have developed a strong brand value that can even withstand the effects of a global recession, the younger financial groups in the Middle East have not been able to develop the same level of brand strength. This means that the level of confidence shown in these banks is also low compared with others in the world that have lived through, and survived, more economic difficulties.This summer even saw Bahrain, the banking capital of the Middle East, for more than three decades, experience harsh times. The Gulf International Bank (GIB) laid off 59 employees at its head office in Bahrain - almost a fifth of the total working there - sparking demonstrations by fellow Bahraini bank

Manpower Employment Outlook Survey Indicates Rougher Road Ahead for Job Seekers as Global Labor Market Set to Slow Further in First Quarter 2009 Slowdown expected to migrate to Singapore, India, Taiwan, others in Asia Pacific The Manpower Employment Outlook Survey of global hiring trends released today reveals that the pace of hiring is set to slow further in the first quarter of 2009 most notably in Singapore, India and Taiwan. The survey, conducted by Manpower Inc., shows that employers in 25 of 33 countries and territories still expect positive hiring activity in the coming quarter; however, those in 30 say they will slow the pace of hiring from three months ago. Year-over-year hiring forecasts are also weaker in 25 countries and territories; and employers in 21 countries and territories are reporting the weakest hiring plans since the survey was established there by Manpower.The global employment picture for the first quarter of the new year is noticeably weaker and the vast majority of employers are telling us that they will take a wait and see approach before hiring or further reducing staff. Unless they see more positive economic signals they will not add employees and, until then, it will be a rougher road for job seekers," said Jeffrey A. Joerres, Chairman and CEO of Manpower Inc. "Interestingly, the number of U.S. companies planning no change in their hiring intentions is considerably higher than during the 2001 recession. This may suggest a much needed pause in downsizing in the first quarter.

Freddie Mac Announces 1 Billion Reopening of 4.125 percent Five Year Reference Notes Security. Freddie Mac announced today that it plans to launch a $1 billion reopening of its 4.125% five-year USD Reference Notes(R) security that matures on September 27, 2013. The issue will price today, Monday, December 1, 2008, and will settle on Tuesday, December 2, 2008.The $1 billion reopening of its 4.125% five-year Reference Notes security will be conducted via an Internet-based auction. The issue, CUSIP 3137EABS7, is listed on the Euro MTF market of the Luxembourg Stock Exchange. After the reopening, the outstanding size of the 4.125% five-year Reference Notes security will be $6 billion. The article painted a misleading and inaccurate picture of Mr. Rubin’s role. The Times article implies and at times explicitly states that Bob Rubin was “an architect of the bank’s strategy” as it related to CDOs and similar products, and was engaged in “drafting” trading plans. In fact, while Mr. Rubin is a member of the Board and plays an advisory and client service role at Citigroup, he was never an “architect” nor was he a drafter of Citigroup’s risk-taking plans and had no operating role.
