In May 2009, the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) weremilitarily defeated by the Sri Lankan Army, effectively ending SriLanka’s brutal 26-year civil war. The LTTE had led a separatistmovement for the creation of an independent Tamil state on theSinhalese-dominated island. It held significant control over theNorthern and Eastern Provinces. The defeat of the LTTE comeson the eve of parliamentary elections, to be scheduled before April2010. The current president, Mahinda Rajapaksa, has decided tocapitalize on his popularity from winning the war and has calledfor early presidential elections as well. These have been set for January26, 2010. Much is at stake—and few, if any, efforts have beenmade to integrate the Tamil populations into the majority Sinhalesesociety in the wake of the LTTE’s defeat. The ruling partyhas little incentive to do so. The political atmosphere is plaguedby distrust among the political parties. Yet, if the presidential andparliamentary elections are viewed as fair and inclusive to all SriLankans, they could represent the first real step toward postwarunity and reconciliation.
